Someone explain the difference between these two things...

My Hitachi LCD projection tv has this VirtualHD?1080p Video thing, but is that really 1080p? What's the difference? Does this mean i'll be able to watch videos in 1080p or not?

I'm confused.

As far as I know that means it has the capability to upscale the source material.

Need the model# to know if it supports real 1080p or not.

Hmmmm...I'm not familiar with those TV's specifically, but that sounds like it might be manufacturer-speak for upscaling lower-resolution sources to 1080p, since currently there is very very little 1080p content out there. As far as if you'll be able to watch real 1080p content...it really depends. If your display can actually display that many pixels and the inputs can support such a resolution, then yes. I would tend to think that if they're advertising 1080p upscaling, that it's probably a "real" 1080p set and you shouldn't have problems once the content comes - but then of course it depends on the inputs.

That's my tv. I've googled the whole VirtualHD thing, but couldn't find anything, though I'm assuming its just upscaling or it lets me watch a 1080p video at perhaps slightly lesser quality (kinda emulating it?)...i really dont know.

The specs list the panel resolution as 1280x720 (720p). So I'm not sure why they're trying to call anything about it 1080p, unless maybe it can take 1080p input sources and scale them down...

Edit: The specs also list inputs only up to 1080i. I'm even more now

The panel resolution is 1280x720 (720p) per the pdf specs. That means probably upscaled 540p for 1080i source material for their virtual 1080p...who knows what thats supposd to mean, probably some marketspeak for their line doubler (quadrupler)

From one standpoint, it looks like a video processor such as Samsung DNIE, and from the other it looks like an upscaler. Don't know wtf this thing is and it's annoying me too!

Since its a 720p panel, 1080i is interpolated, and probably 540p upscaled at that. Thats not to say it doesn't look good though
