Someone explain Evolution to me.

Yzzim

Lifer
A friend and I were talking about the different aspects of Evolution and Creation. One point that we both cannot understand is how Evolution even started. I'm hoping some people here can enlighten me and explain to me how they believe it happened. I don't know too much about evolution, so bare with me.

So first we have the big bang, which stuff explodes and then we get galaxies and planets, etc. We've got the earth that is sitting here with no life on it whatsoever, except a single cell organism, correct?

So that little single celled organism evolved over millions of years to create the life we have today.

Ok, now here's my question. If that single celled organism somehow evolved into a lizard, a male lizard, just how did that lizard reproduce to make other lizards? There has to be a male/female lizard to make more, so did a male and female lizard just happen to evolve at the same time? If the lizard doesn't have a female, it can't reproduce, so there would be no more lizards.

That question goes for every other living thing out there. There had to be a male/female in order to keep that specific species alive...without one or the other, the species is [Fedex commercial] DOOOooMMED!!!! [/Fedex commercial]

All species have both male and female sexual organs. Some species are male AND female. If you pick a starting point, such as the most basic bacteria, they then produce an offspring (probably unisexed) that then reproduces with another unisexed bacteria. Don't think of it as a human being popping out of a rock. It happened over billions of years. Look at how fast evolution has taken place in the last 100,000 years alone...

If you are wanting to know where live "began", no one knows. I know that many scientists believe that life started out as the most basic protein, then somehow evolved into microorganisms...

I dunno...

Exactly. Many people just can't think in terms of hundreds of millions of years.

Also, you should do some reading on Exobiology

Just read this, then go buy this book. This is a HUGE subject, and you touched on everything from cosmology to biology; do yourself a favor and read the material, because no one is going to be able to answer your questions in a forum post.

Not that people won't try. 😛

the thing I don't understand (one of the many things, actually....) is that physical traits can't be passed on to an offspring.

So say a bird started looking for food inside a tree, and his beak got so hard from pecking the tree, the bird over 10000000000000000 years wouldn't evolve into a woodpecker....the bird's offsprings would all have soft beaks and the hard beak would die with mom/dad bird.

I know, and it will turn into a debate with everyone calling each other idiots, morons, etc. I just prefer to learn material through as few intellectual indirections as possible, and Stephen Gould is about as close as you can get, imo.

Well, I might as well start it off then.

Descartes, you're an idiot!

Why can't physical traits be passed on to an offspring?

If I pound my head into a tree my entire life, my head is going to be rock hard and calloused. If I lift weights for my entire life, everyday, I'm going to be huge. If I cut off my arm, I'm only going to have one arm my entire life.

However, my son/daughter isn't going to have a rock hard calloused head, nor are they going to be born with the strength I have now, and they definitely won't be born with only one arm (well, hope not, lol).

See what I'm getting at?

And you are incorrectly assuming that the single cell organism just evolved suddenly to a modern day lizard. The steps were at tad more gradual, requiring millions and millions of years.

Like...?

I was replying to yzzim's statement that physical traits can't be passed on to offspring.

If that's the case, then every living creature born would have completely random physical traits and probably wouldn't look anything like the species of its parents.

As far as I know the first documented theory of evolution was printed nearly 2000 years ago. It is a well known book. The Bible.

Did you ever read Genesis?

Genesis 1:1, God created earth without life,
Genesis 1:2, God created water without life,
Genesis 1:11, God created simple life (no animals yet at this stage),
Genesis 1:20, God created animal life in the water first, then birds,
Genesis 1:21, God later created additional water life (including water mammals), and additional birds,
Genesis 1:24, God created land mammals and other land life,
Genesis 1:26, God lastly created man.

The bible said those things happened in a very specific order.

Now what does evolution say? Yep first came earth, then water, followed by simple life, then water animals, then land animals, and finally man. Gee doesn't that sound familiar?

Well, sure, your immediate offspring won't. But, over time (millions and millions of years), changes will occur.

You seriously should do some detailed research. The links posted above by Descartes are excellent.

STFU and keep your creation science bunk out of this thread.

This is about evolution, not your twisted views of religion.

HA you thumper! Birds came after land animals! And the first mammal was not in water! Stupid bible, can't even get that straight.
