it sounds like a bunch of teenaged kids that got dumped by their gf's. as a result they pick up some instruments, hit them at random times, and whine. that's about all there is to say.

Emo is like punk rock for crybabies.

I like some "emo" music, but I wouldn't put JEW in the same category as The Ataris, Dashboard Confessional or Saves the Day. JEW is closer to rock/punk than anything else.

Saves the Day and the Ataris really define "emo" music to me. It gets really old after a while.

Emo is a subgenre of indie-rock and modern-punk that's somewhat progressive, arty and unconventional. It's kinda hard to classify. It gets the "emo" tag from "emotional" and emo bands generally use dynamics and demanding techniques to convey emotion. The lyrics are generally personal.

From what i understand emo is slow punk. so take the whine vocals of punk, with all the lame ass attitude and stuff, and remove the bad music. Add some better music to the bad vocals and you get emo. leaving you with a feeling of "wow, this is great music" but only when compared to punk music. which doesn't say much.
