someone enlighten me on this

So you go on to the internet into a forum asking for advice, you just get a whole bunch of people telling you to go "google it". After googling it, you find more threads about people telling others to "google it".

What is the point of message boards if everyone just tells each other to "google it".

Obviously off topic is for discussion ... but for actual problem solving? If you have an answer, or a suggestion, just type it... instead of typing "go google it".

sheesh.

What gets me is that fact that people expect others to do their own work for free. If I can find the answer to your question with a simple google search, you should be doing that too. You have to be willing to help yourself if you want others to help you.

We have an obligation to ridicule people to discourage them from asking stupid, obvious questions.

Again...then what is the point of a message board for whatever support you seek? If you don't want to do the work, then don't even be on the message board, don't contribute, don't post!

If there is a problem out there and happens to be on a forum where I am a part of, I'll do what I can to help them find a solution. Even if it means going to a search engine to find some information to guide them to it.

Otherwise don't post. I'm not attacking you Crusty, I'm just saying if you (meaning anyone) don't want to help them, just don't post. It doesn't do any good to tell someone to "go google it".

Because if it's a stupid question it deserves a stupid answer.

Sure, that might be true. However what if it is a more in-depth question that might actually require a little more analysis? What is the point of a message board then -- especially messages board built to help people. No point in having it if the ALMIGHTY GOOGLER is around..........

If it's not a stupid question then people won't tell you to google it. I see you're trying to say this will lead to a catch 22 scenario but that's hardly the case. Provided it isn't a stupid question.

Most of the questions that get those responses the answers is within the first 3 results of Google. I've never seen or maybe rarely seen any case where that response wasn't appropriate.

Regardless of the question, if someone obviously isn't willing to put in the effort to figure out their question then why should anyone else put in the effort to do it? I see it all the time in the Technical forums and it's rather disheartening, especially when you see it's a question directly from a homework assignment.

Because you can't take what peolpe say on a message forum seriously.

Sometimes it's perfectly acceptable to tell people to just Google it. Other times it's not. Of course you can't expect the people trying to answer the question to know - that's why the OP has to explain why he's asking the question if it's something that seems like it would be found elsewhere. Basically, if you want to ask something, you should first search and then if you still can't find the answer, tell people that you searched and couldn't find it and do your best to explain why your situation is unique. I guess the point is you're more likely to get help if you ask a repeat question smartly than if you ask a new question in a stupid way.

What annoys me more is when a board full of enthusiasts has a couple stickies to help people, but:

- The stickies are really outdated (saw a guide of some sort that was last updated in 2005 and still stickied)
- The original post of a guide is so cryptic and aimed towards insiders that it's difficult to figure out what they're even talking about, and
- When you ask for further clarification, they tell you to "read the thread" (of course, the thread is 50 pages long and you have no idea which page has the important information).

The problem with those is that while a search may turn up a guide thread, it won't necessarily pick out the important posts in it. This is why it's so important to keep the stickies updated in the INITIAL POST.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people. 🙂

The "Google it" response is generally for questions which don't merit discussion. Questions that can be answered with a simple fact, which can be found via Google.

It's for questions where opinions or personal experiences are irrelevant.

This thread, for example, doesn't merit that response. One asking what error code EA436X means, or why the sky is blue, etc - might.

Perfect example.

There's definitely a place for 'Google it', but its very over-used, particularly by anti-social forum gnats who don't have anything better to add.
