Ok, I got the basic SBLive value card with my tbird. So, I'm hearing they have problems. That's great to hear now... what's the scoop with this card?

What "problems"?

Its only problem is that is poor quality output jacks.

The problem isn't with the AMD.

I've heard some have problems with W2K and some hardware combinations (basically a driver problem, IMO).

If it works OK for you, K3wl. :)

It's not a driver problem, it's the fact that some people are too dumb to install the card :p

If it doesn't work in the first try, go into the BIOS and set IRQ5 reserved for Legacy Device.

Dammit. I am not installing a different driver for this card. I did that before I formatted. I downloaded an SBLive driver set directly from Creative Labs. I installed the drive. An hour later I rebooted (it said I had to reboot - quite obviously). Halfway through Win2K bootup, it's supposed to flash the keyboard light - a signal that it "initiates" it or runs the device driver or whatever. Well, that just didn't happen. And the mouse decided to die along with it. It's only at the Win2K splash screen that they stop responding. When Windows loads, no mouse and no keybaord no matter what. I was forced to reformat/reinstall Winbloze. I'm glad I kept a secondary partition with all my stuff on it!

Anyway, this sucks though, I have Win2K, and the Sblive, i didn't know there were potential problems. But it was so cheap! $50?? What could I have gotten better for fifty bucks? I have the ECS K7S5A mobo, disabled onboard sound, disabled onboard lan, disabled onboard midi/game port, disabled onboard modem. I have the PCI modem, PCI sound card, and I use my PCI Voodoo Banshee, and I use the PCI Dlink 538TX as NIC. All the components detect and set up perfectly with no problems (I don't have to install a single driver, 2k has drivers for all my components! pretty sweet).

But, sometimes I hear glitches/annoying sounds when playing mp3s. And just before, I noticed that when I click the X to minimize Kazaa, it does a litte distorted vvffpht sound when I'm playing my song. why? no reason to. Brand spankin new Yamaha sound system, brand spankin new mobo, sound card and modem. So.. yeah, that is a piss off.

What are my options from this point, without spending a cent. ?

I have that same MB,just finishe dputting the system together.I have the SB Live X-Gamer,I too have those same pops and cracles and pops when playing mpgs and mp3s.It must be the board, because just last week I have the SB in my other puter and it worked fine.I disabled onboard sound, video and joystick, but use the lan.
I havent messed with it much, just figured i needed to update a driver or something. Now I see its a PROBLEM.

damn I hope not. A driver better fix this, I can't live with that kind of a problem! It's just too crummy. I guess that's what we have to live with for buying a cheap board. :( it looked good on paper... ahh.

dammit...

speaking of the board, when i shut my puter down for a while(8-12 hours)it loses its display driver.Or rather it goes back to the 640x480 resolution and I cant switch to 800x600 unless I reinstall my VooDoo drivers.

I'm running an SB Live! 5.1 Platinum on an Iwill KK266-R that has a VIA chipset, forgot which one it is, but I haven't had any problems at all with it. I don't know what the big concern is, probably b/c I haven't experienced it myself. :)

anyway, best of luck with your system. just hope for the best. :\

I just love how people post hardware questions in OT (Hey, I'd do it too).

Try posting this in more hardware-oriented problems. People that browse there frequently may have a solution for this.

RSI, I had a similar problem when I was using a PCI graphics card a while back(on an SlotA K7M)

When I replaced the video card with an AGP card the problems went away.
