Someone enlighten me on Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman

Is there something I'm missing? The theories were interesting, but the way in which he told it was boring as hell. I didn't care for any of the characters at all. Einstein was portrayed as an depressed and emo person, his friend was the generic cheer-you-up-any-way-I-can, and all the generic characters in each theory of time were distant, with no names or personal connection to the reader at all.
