Someone convince me that I should buy a GeForce3

I'm planning on upgrading one of my systems soon. Current setup:

PIII Katmai 500MHz
256MB PC100 SDRAM
Some Proprietary Gateway Mobo
Diamond v550 TNT1
Built in Sound

I figure I can buy myself a new motherboard (EpoX 8k7a), a 1.2GHz Athlon (about $110) and overclock it with a good hs/f (maybe $25?) and then grab 256megs of pc2100 ($45). That puts me around $300. I just can't justify spending an extra $350+ for a GeForce3. One of my other systems is a PIII 700@1.015GHz, 128ram and a Herc. 64meg GF2.

So, what should I do? It seems stupid to buy an old video card, especially since I'm a gamer, but the price is so damn high...is it going to drop any time soon?

get one or ill shoot you!

then u can tell people you HAD to get one and there werent any other options 🙂

Nope. I can't convince U. U know the pro's and con's of buying one now. You either have to bite the bullet and take the plunge or wait, untill you just gotta have one. One of your systems has a GF2 Ultra, albeit u don't have per pixel shading etc your not losing out on much.

Just wait a little longer is my advice. U can buy mine off me when I upgrade to a GF3 Ultra 128MB beast. 😉

Seriously though, with my system running Q3A at 1600 x 1200 x 32 everything maxed and running demo four, I get 80fps and it runs really well, but in terms of new features.....there is nothing different, so why bother. Wait for a few games other than the 3DMark2001 to come out. Then do it! It was good while it lasted to be one of the first to get one, but the kudos has worn off now.

😉

I got to agree. The price tag of the gf3 just pushes me away. Gotta pay for what you want, but it's not like I play games at 1600x1200 32bit anyways. I'm just waiting till this Christmas

<< Diamond v770 TNT1 >>

If I remember correctly, the Diamond Viper 770 is a TNT2, and the Diamond Viper 550 is the TNT1.

I never buy the latest technology....it simply costs too much...you'll feel really stupid buying that card in a few months (I remember when my friend bought a Geforce DDR for $400 CDN...if he only waited a few more months...)

Since you have had a TNT1 for some time, I take it that you're not a hardcore gamer, right?....You should be "ok" with a Geforce 2....I picked up a regular Geforce SDR to upgrade my current TNT2 Pro for about $60- pretty good considering I can turn around and sell my current video card for about $30-$35, bringing my upgrade total to about $30......

My TNT2 pro runs almost every game perfectly at 800X600....I got the Geforce so I could play at 1024X768 (since I am buying a 17" monitor)....

Like you said, I dont think a video card should cost as much as the motherboard/cpu/ram/hsf...

Keep the money and spend it on something worthwile (maybe something not computer related 🙂 )

I'd have to say wait on that card and get maybe a GF2 pro or ultra. I saw in hot deals the other day that you can get a GF3 from dell for just under $300, but that's still an awful lot of money. Wait around for the next card to come out and then decide...maybe by then some games will require the new technology. At this point though it's probably really not worth the money...

Just read a review of Max Payne and a post in Software where U comment on not being able to convince yourself to get a GF3 for $400. Well MAx Payne will be out this month! There, reason to get one, now go get one!

😉

Alright, I changed what I said. I really have a v550 in this comp. and a GF2GTS in the other. I was typing too fast. 😉

<< Since you have had a TNT1 for some time, I take it that you're not a hardcore gamer, right? >>

No, I am a hardcore gamer, I have just been able to suffice with only one box being able to play games (the one with the gf2gts)
