Someone cashed my check

The other day I saw that Ebates mailed me a check in May that I didn't get yet. I emailed them about it and they said it cleared their account in May.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I am very ticked about someone messing around with my mail - I have had a few other things that never made it to me and now I am wondering about those too.

What can I do? Is it totally up to the police and how much they care about pursuing it? It's not the check (only $20) it's the fact that some little whizbag would take something that is mine without a care in the world. I would LOVE to press charges if possible but I don't think the police are going to care. Does anyone know about this stuff?

where do u live, a apt, house, with roommates, but it sure does look like someone is stealing from you, set up a camera and put some fake money, or could put real money but note the numbers on the bills so u can report the person who did it, similar thing happened to my uncle

Contact your local Post Master, it is a federal crime to tamper with or steal someones mail.

I live in an apt bldg with 6 other tenants, but they're all older and I don't think any of them would bother with stealing a $20 check. It had to have been given to the wrong address because my box is locked.

Also, - long story short- a package got lost in Dec. and there was no identifying info. recorded by the post office. I called the Post Master and he said they'd look for it, then called back to tell me it was returned to the sender BUT he had no idea who the sender was.

I think when you ask them to do anything outside of matching the address on a letter to the address at a house they collapse under the pressure and deal with it by just ignoring it. How can I really pressure them this time - who's in charge of the Post Master?

If your local Post Master will not get off his @ss, contact your state's Post Master, you can find his name and number at your local Post Office.

Thanks. I'm going to look into it and be a real jerk this time if I have to. :D

Don't bother with the postmaster, instead contact the postal inspectors, they are the ones who actually have the power to do something about these type of things.

I've been an eBates.com customer since 1999 and it's never happened to me.

Then again I have everything mailed to my PO Box.

Don't banks track where all of the checks get cashed? Maybe you could find out what city/bank cashed it (or whose account it was deposited into if they were stupid enough)?

I have a "similar" problem. A few months back I was approved for 2 different credit cards from two companies. Each of them were sent around the same time but BOTH of them were "lost" in the mail. I live in an apt. complex and the mail is dropped off by the mail man but is distrubuted by someone else who is NOT employed by the post office. I receive A LOT of rebate checks in the mail so sometimes I'm afraid someone *might* take my checks and cash them since a majority of the checks are unconsealed post cards with the face value printed on the front. However, I have no real evidence at this point because it could have been just a simple mistake by the post office. I've thus far received all important items so there is no real reason for me to worry.

I'll contact the post master/inspectors if and when I have real evidence.

I was just talking with my mailman and she gave me the number to the postal inspectors and said the same thing as you.

They should be able to tell who cashed the check by looking at who deposited it with the bank. It was probably some grocery store or one of those check cashing places and they would have put their stamp on it. Whoever did it didn't check id so they're out - even though it's only $20, I'm still glad they lose it.
