someone bet me $50...

jlee

Lifer
...that she'd beat me (with my not-quite-stock '91 MR2 turbo) in a drag race (proper 1/4 mile drag strip) with her new 2011 Mini Cooper S. 182bhp FWD.

Any takers? 😛

Depends if her car is supercharged or not, I believe there is a dealer installed supercharger option for the S which bumps power into the 250 range. Someone else probably has specifics.

It's an S, which is turbocharged from the factory. She claims 182hp, but what I can find shows 172hp/177lb-ft (92lb-ft with the overboost function).

Here's my car (on a bad day), if you're not familiar...

Maybe I'm thinking of an older model then. I thought there was a dealer installed supercharger to replace the factory turbo at some point. Then again I've been grilling and drinking beer all day so I could be completely wrong. 🙂

Either way somehow I doubt the mini is going to be running mid 13s... somehow I envision it as a low 15 second car, maybe high 14s but that's pushing it... again, I could be wrong. 🙂

you sure she'd just not hoping to get you as far away as quickly as possible 🙂

No race is won until it's raced.

Previous gen mini's (I think model code r55) had superchargers and there was a John Cooper works model that boosted up in the 200's. I think it was offered in the states (although I believe the most powerful was in England), but it was quite expensive and I suspect not many were sold in such configurations. Mini's seem to have trouble putting down more than 200hp effectively.

It's a she, what did you expect she knows? Shape of the car and color, that's it.

So what will your car run...? Average 1/4 mile...? This might provide some insight...?

IIRC a Mini-S is high 14's to low 15's

You should definitely take that bet!

You're exactly right. From what I've read, a stock S is mid-15's and a JCW is mid/high 14's.

Hah I am good at that already...we are not exactly "close friends" and never will be.

You're absolutely right, it's not won until it's raced. I'll be sure to post video.

I don't know what mine will run. Last time I went (with a stiff transmission and shitty tires), I pulled a 13.65. Trans is now nice and slick and my tires are decent. I'd like to see a 13.2, but I really have no idea. If I got off my ass and installed my extra stuff (TD06 20G, 38mm Tial wastegate, etc), I'd be well into the 12's.

you turned a 13.65 stock on shitty tires?

I think these cars were around 14.5-15.0 stock.

Most trucks that race are called "flying bricks"...

You would have to call mine a "flying concrete block" 😛

FF Fail. With GREAT tires and a GREAT launch and 1-2 shift, with proper feathering and keeping out of the bog, that Mini isn't going to keep up with anything but a totally botched launch and missed shifts from even a lightly modded MR-2 Turbo of that gen.

People forget when paper racing FF cars that there's a lot more than just mashing pedals, to get the numbers you really have to learn the car. It only gets harder with more power, I tested a Neon SRT-4 and it was difficult to not get excessive wheelspin from the stock tires, and the 1-2 shift was similar, couldn't do it full bore without boiling the tires and losing acceleration.

^^ I doubt she'll be capable of much more than low 15s, and that's being generous.

It's not just the car, it's the driver

Yeah in this case it's no joke at all. Launch with a fraction less than ideal power and you bog a bit, costing precious time before the revs build enough to really get into the powerband. Launch with a fraction more than ideal power and you get wheelspin/wheel hop, which again hurts your time. Shift at full-power at the top of 1st into 2nd can be problematic as well.

I just need to remember to be careful on the launch so I don't red-light and blow the whole thing. 😱 I figure I'll do a decent launch from about 4k, maybe 5k if the track is sticky (last time it wasn't..or my tires were just that bad) and just drive. 😛

I'm not making enough power myself to cause traction problems in first gear, let alone second. I can get some wheelspin launching in first, but I can usually get it to hook up pretty quickly. Second hooks up no problem. Once the bigger turbo goes in, I'll have to re-learn how to launch it.

That's not your car, your car is orange!

BUSTED!

OH NOES! 😱

Yeah RWD is much easier to launch than FWD, particularly when you consider that when you start moving forward, weight shifts to the rear wheels a bit 😛 Tight suspension helps FF, but nothing can totally fix that problem. So you end up with :

BOG <.............> / sweet<..> spot / <.........> wheelspin/hop
