Apparently there's amazing climbing (one of the top 5 crags in the US) 2 or 3 hours from home in upstate NY where I'll be over the summer after this semester ends but it's all trad climbs and I have no trad gear or even a clue how to use it. Maybe I'll be able to find a trad climber. You guys needed permits though? I've never been to a place where you needed a permit before...

Actually, I dunno if they needed permits or not. My guess was that the ranger wouldn't just let you start scaling 75-foot walls without some sort of verification that you were competent in setting up and operating your safety equipment, so I just figured they had some sort of permit, but maybe you don't 🙂 This was in Altamont State Park in Tennessee. Might be different in NJ and NY.

We did some rappelling, too. One was a 200-foot drop. It's a heck of a lot of fun, although stepping off of a cliff is VERY hard to do.

Most places don't require anything. If you screw up I guess it's Darwinism. We did some rappelling too, there was the one that went inverted after the first 15 feet so over 100 feet of it was just dangling down on the rope without touching anything. REALLY cool.

Glad to hear you had a good time! Do you know what part of Mexico (city and state)??? Just curiosity.

Did you go with anyone from the Tulane Climbing Club by any chance?

Nope, went with some friends. I never have done anything with the climbing club, I don't like the rock gym they spend most of their tme at. It's not that great.
Yeah Climbax sucks. I was wondering because one of my friends is in the Climbing Club and goes on all the trips (even though he graduated over a year ago).
