I bet that insurance companies in the US work differently then in the UK.

I know some county in MD was trying to make it a fine-able offense to leave your keys in the car while running due to the number of thefts the county was seeing... I want to say Montgomery County, but am not sure. I wouldn't doubt insurance companies excluding coverage in such situations... they're always looking for a chance to screw us, so why not on this ground?

It's illegal in NJ, but I think that's more for environmental reasons.

And consumers try to screw insurance companies too.

My brother had his car stolen out of his garage as it warmed up. He saw the guy taking off in it and hopped on, but the guy pulled a gun and my brother jumped off.

He was covered by insurance, btw.

Does this mean it was ripped off and left lying somewhere, or does this mean you found the truck and the only thing salvageable was the roof rack?

BTW, where I used to live in WV, it's illegal to leave a car running unattended, but everybody did it. People would leave their cars running for upwards of 15 minutes while getting coffee at the Sheetz. I know insurance, at least in Berkeley and Morgan counties, won't cover a car stolen if it was left running w/keys.

Yep I've got one on my car. The alarm stays armed while the car is on until it's disarmed by me. Also, if someone touches the brake pedal, it'll automatically shut off the car. That and the club I keep on is usually enough to deter thieves.

Yes, you need to put the key in the ignition.

O/P your wife is fortunate you don't live in my area, should would have been charged with a crime for leaving the vehicle running and unlocked with the keys in the ignition. I don't agree with that law, but it is still in effect.

If someone wants to break into a car bad enough they aren't going to waste time with a "scanner".

This thread is starting to make me want to pick up a remote starter for my car, but I don't know anything about them really.

Anyone want to point me in the right direction? Good brands? Features I should be looking for? Should I order one online and pay a shop to install it or buy one at a shop and have them install it?
