Evan thinks it's good to have your fan on your heatsink blowing on your proc and I think it's good to suck the air off. What is it?

Alright, for a serious answer, it should be blowing AWAY from the processor. It's purpose is to remove the hot air from the area, not to try to blow cool air onto the chip.

Pretender,

Actually, it depends on the heatsink design, as well as the size and placement of the fins. With some sinks blowing in is better, because it was designed to channel the air through the fins, down and out.

Suck-off is better.

With the suck-off you're creating a vacuum to dissipate the heat from the CPU.

All the machines I have built have always had the cpu fan blow into the heatsink for a good reason. That little fan doesn't provide enough sucking power to pull the hot air from the bottom of the heatsink which is closes to the cpu.

If you push air at the heatsink it will pull cooler and FORCE it all the way to the bottom. It is easier to control air flow that is being pushed. It basically travels farther.

So your telling me my 7000rpm Delta fan doesn't have enough power. Just leave. Leave right now.

My God, this is almost as bad as religion.

It depends on heatsink design, & the environment in which it is installed. Some coolers are specifically designed for "blowing" rather than "sucking," such as the Agilent ArctiCooler. Some are specifically designed for "sucking," such as the copper HedgeHog & the venerable Alphas PXX6035 line. HS's that have sucking in mind may have a shroud around them to ensure that air flows through as much of the heatsink as possible.

Bottom line? TRY IT! Most modern motherboards have temperature monitoring functions, at LEAST in the form of a temperature probe. You probably won't see more than a couple degree difference anyway, it's not like one way is going to hose your CPU.

Stupid question #1: How can you reverse the direction of the fan (other than by removing the fan physically and screwing it on backwards?

Stupid question #2: Does anyone know which way the Golden Orb's fan should go?

it depends on your set up... I can create a wind tunnel that blows toward my processor with a fan with a lot of CFMs which would wipe that sucking fan off the face of the earth (literally, well yeah)...

mine has been blowing AT my processor since i have a side mounted blowhole, and having it "suck" blowing away from the processor would create too much turbulence in MY case as it is now...
