Everyone needs an assault weapon for fun and sport, right?

<pulls up lawn chair and waits for comparisons of assault weapons and fast cars from NRA gun nuts>

You're more likely to die of a car accident in the US than of gun violence. In fact, you could be a soldier in iraq and still have a lower chance of dying of gun violence than of dying in a car accident. I say we ban cars.

<-not a gun owner, doesn't watch nascar, lives in one of the most liberal parts of the country and wishes we would tackle the real problems instead of the ones we've been told to fear.

You can't drive to work in a gun.

Guns don't transport food across the country.

Idiot.

There is no need to drive faster then 50 mph, and statistics show that casualties greatly improve at higher speeds. So lets limit all cars to 50 mph.

I didn't say anything to the contrary.

Savij was comparing banning guns to banning cars.

If you think guns are as helpful to society as cars then you're a freakin moron.

Gun ownership is a right.

Driving is a privilege.

Lets ban tabacco and alcohol then. How is travel greater then 50mph helpful to society? Ban fast driving. Heck, it's even illegal so its not like we'd be doing anything crazy.

WTF are you talking about?

I never said you should ban fast cars. I never even said you should ban guns.

I was just pointing out that comparing guns to cars is retarded.

the thread started out as comparing sports cars to so called "assault weapons", not just cars and guns in general.

if you don't think guns are helpful to society, then you're equally a "freakin moron".

oh, and i've never seen a pizza delivery guy driving a sports car.

It did not. It started out with a link to a newspaper article about a rather assertive method of making one's displeasure known.

True, but the 2nd post was from an anti-gun nutcase that started the whole thing.

i have serious doubts that nonhostile injuries exceed hostile injuries. if at all true, it's because the enemy's weapon of choice is no longer firearms. historically, shrapnel is far and away the leading cause of casualties in the modern era.

"assault weapon" is a concept invented by the media. Many of the "assault rifles" that you see are the same rifles as sport rifles with a different stock.

"assault weapon" is a term invented by politicians. the "assault rifle" was conceived of in the first world war, and perfected by the germans with the stg44. yes, semi-auto rifles with a pistol grip are mis-legislated as assault rifles.

The US Army's definition of "assault rifle"
"Assault rifles are short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges."
US Army intelligence document FSTC-CW-07-03-70, November 1970
