Some WINS help?

I am just now starting to dive into setting up my machines on my network to use WINS configurations to use their NETBios names rather than IP addresses. Eventually I am going to setup my server as a PDC running Win2k Advanced Server. Is there a way to have my workstation automatically download a copy of the WINS LmHosts file everytime they boot from the server? Is copying the file to each machine more practical?

Thanks

btw: I searched the web, but could only find either terrible examples that were 5 years old or completely different topics than I searched for.

Just set up your server to be a WINS Server and point your clients to that IP, manually or by DHCP. The WINS server will keep track of all the Netbios clients on your network and will respond with an IP when one of them requests a name resolution. Also, when you upgrade to Active Directory, you no longer need WINS since you'll be using DNS, although WINS is still supported. You really shouldn't need to use Lmhosts. Any more questions, just ask. :)

why use wins??? Use DNS and enable Netbios via DNS. It is much faster and more reliable than WINS and you get the benifit of having a local DNS server to help speeed up web page transfers and usage. Much better solution than enabling WINS.

Yeah, don't use wins. And copying LMHosts is not practical. It is possible with only a few computers, but a pain in the ass, you have to do it every time you put a new machien on the network. Also win2k no longer has pdc's and bdc's. Just domain controllers.
