I booted up my computer today to find out that the sound card is uninstalled. WTF! How did it just uninstall itself. Nobody else in my house is intelligent or malicious enough to do that. I'm using WinXP Pro.

Before I reinstalled it, I decided to make a precautionary anti-virus sweep. While that was happening, I was surfing the net and DLing some stuff. Then all of a sudden, after 5 or 10 minutes, windows goes into the shutdown sequence. Again, WTF!

I just don't get it.

No malware detected by PC-cillin 2006. I'm using FF2 RC3, you think that could be a reason? Maybe a vulnerability?

I have no errors other than with PerfNet. It shows that this app. consitantly causes an error.

Not sure if this is similar to your problem.. but heres my weird sound card story.
I was using a my computer normally one night, then logged off and left it running (Folding@Home was still running as a service). When I came back to it the next day, it was shutdown. I was a little confused since it was running rock solid for months and the power had not gone out. When I tried booting it up, it just gave a black screen. So I started pulling hardware and tried booting one by one. First item I pulled was the sound card (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) and the system started as normal. So I popped the sound card back in and started it up again. Same problem, this time I touched the sound card, and found two chips.. maybe power regulator or something were extremely hot and getting hotter and hotter. I guess something on the card malfunctioned over night and destroyed it.
