Some websites not loading?

OK. I don't understand this thing. I loaded some anti-spyware stuff on a machine that uses AOL to connect to the internet. Loaded spybot, adaware, MS anti-spyware & hijackthis. Cleaned it up nicely, but not, sites that used to load won't load. Google loads, CNN, yahoo, but other sites get "Page cannot be displayed". I know those sites work, cause i RDC'd into my home machine and got to them just fine. I tried pinging and they resolve fine. Cleared the cache and cookies. Anybody have any ideas? I tried uninstalling those anti-spyware things and it still isn't working.

Oh yeah, I would also like to avoid having to reinstall AOL. Stupid person doesn't remember their password and don't really want to go through the resetting password with AOL.

Could be the websites are on the hosts file. Do a search in the windows directory for "hosts". Open the file in notepad and inspect it.

update. it seems to only happen on SSL sites. i cleared all the SSL sites under content and SSL 2.0 & 3.0 are both checked off, but can't load any SSL sites still. tested it on my company page to confirm that. the main site loads fine, the SSL of the same site doesn't. page cannot be displayed.

I'm going to bring them firefox and will actually get to look at the machine myself a tad later. I'm sure firefox will work just fine, since AOL uses IE and it's confirmed that no SSL pages with IE are working. Know any other things I could try to get IE working though?
