Some Web sites unreachable

(I originally posted this in the Networking form, then realized it probably should be posted here-sorry for the double post)

Strange deal last night, I was able to retrieve my email no problem, and reach some web sites, but others were unreachable. My browser (IE) would try and try and finally time out. Didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it (for instance I could get to my home page which is Verizon's DSL page, but when I tried to go to my customized Verizon home page-no dice).

I tried a variety of different web sites but some were easily reached (google, ESPN), others couldn't be reached (this one). Also could not get into multiplayer game site of America's Army.

Tried rebooting my computer (XP) as well as my DSL modem and wireless router (DLINK) through which I am directly connected. Also ran my Virus scan, Ad-Aware, and Spybot programs.

Any ideas why this happened, didn't get a chance to try it this morning

Sounds like a DNS problem - maybe Verizon's DNS server was acting up...any common sites that were cached were reachable but if it had to resolve the name upstream it failed.

A good way to check is to go to a command prompt (start/run/cmd.exe or start/run/command.exe for Win98) and try to ping the site (ping www.anandtech.com). If you don't get an IP address back, it's probably a DNS problem.

Saw a post on Slashdot this morning regarding the problem. It appears Akamai was having problems.

Due to a peering problem between ATT and UUNet, a subset of UUNet users may have experienced problems accessing Akamai delivered sites between 8-10pm EDT on Saturday May 22, 2004. The problem has been fully resolved

Thanks for the replies. Here's a (probably dumb) question: if the common sites were cached, how would they be updated (was getting updates on ESPN for sure).

I'll see when I get home if everything is fine, if not I'll try the ping idea.

I see the UUnet problem was Saturday, my problem was last night.
