What is the max resolution of your current display? What games do you currently play or plan to play in the next 6 months?

I'd have to agree with the notion that upgrading to a x1950, while a great card in it's own right, is not enough of a jump to justify the money spent. I would seriously doubt you're going to see anywhere near $200 for your old card at this point - think closer to $100.

All signs point to an Nvidia part refresh on the horizon and you may see some price drops on the current gen 8800 GTS parts that will make it more affordable to jump into this series. Going from an 1800xt into anything else in the x19xx or 79xx series isn't going to be enough of a performance jump to make the money spent worthwhile. I'd also keep the 2900xt on your radar, yesterday BB had these out the door for $320 which is a heck of a lot of video card for the money. If ATI is pushing to get this part into the $300-$325 pricepoint it stands to reason Nvidia will push their 320 and 640 meg GTS parts into the $250/300 price range respectively to compete. I was under the impression that a 65nm die shrink is in the works for the 8800 series come fall which will make them cheaper for Nvidia to produce which will hopefully mean lower street prices.

So wait a minute...

The OP can get:

an EVGA (lifetime warranty!) 8800GTS/320 meg card from newegg for $259 plus freight after a $20 rebate....

or

a Powercolor x1950XT 512 meg card for $259 plus freight with Rainbox Six Vegas for free (the $239 card he linked is not available on the site)

...and people are steering him toward the X1950? Why?

The 8800GTS/320 meg is STILL faster than the x1950xtx w/ 512 meg at 1920x1200 resolution where texture memory starts to become an issue for the 8800GTS. The 8800GTS/320 meg is much faster in current DX9 titles and brings DX10 to the party for the same amount of money as the 1950XT/512 meg card - makes no sense to go with the ATI solution for this kind of cash.

Because those are the only cards he listed, and because it's not impossible to get an x1950xt for a lot cheaper.

if that comes back in stock it'll be a really good deal for him.

A jump from X1800XT to a X1950XT can be between 20% and up to 40% in best case scenarios because the X1950XT has bigger caches and 32 more pixel shaders, but the advantage from the X1800XT to a X1950XT is pretty much the same as the X1950XT to a 8800GTS 320MB, I would recommend going to the 8800GTS 320 if you don't play in ultra high resolutions, in the anandtech Review I don't see the 8800GTS 320 wiping the floor with the X1950XT, overall is faster, but to see a sizeable difference, is better going to the GTS 640MB or GTX.
