Some VERY nice videos of HDR+AA, and plain AA in a few games

First off, no this isnt my site. ;) In fact, Ive never been there before today. Saw these on another forum, and thought there very well done.

http://www.teamati.com/

Right under "TeamATi Announcements", click video 1, and video 2 to download. Went very fast for me, 600k+.

The first shows AA, and no AA in BF2. Then HDR, and no HDR in Farcry. Then HDR and HDR+AA in Farcry. Then shows HDR and HDR+AA in 3dMark06. The second shows HDR and then HDR+AA in Oblivion. To me, the difference is pretty obvious. Still shots do not do it justice.

edit, and no this isnt a slam on cards that cant do it. NV will very likely have a card out that can do it very soon, so it will be a moot point. So lets try not to go there. I have never seen a video compare them, and these do it very, very well I think. If anything, it will give NV users something to look forward to.

You know what's funny, when you watch the first video, look at the shadows in the Battlefield 2 scene. They're hardly improving. I thought this was Full Scene antialiasing? With the HDR all they're showing is excessive bloom. I'm just not impressed. The 3Dmark one was eye-pleasing however.

shadows always look crappy in BF2, doesnt matter if you have AA on or not :(

I noticed that. When are they going to fix it? Shouldn't supersampling be taking the whole scene into account? If so why are these shadows being "missed"? Any ideas? It's just odd they'd use BF2 as an example when it has an unsightly AA problem, that's all.

It shan't be fixed. I guess since AA is built-in the developers screwed up by applying it before dynamic shadows, or rather tacking on dynamic shadows afterwards. Worse, even when in-game AA is disabled, driver AA cannot be applied in an attempt to correct it or otherwise achieve higher quality. It doubly sucks because developers have failed for years to include such basic in-game configuration and then when they do they fark it up.

I dont know about for NV hardware nowdays, but I could have sworn I enabled 8x SLI AA thru the CP. You can enable whatever AA you want on ATi cards. Just disable Cat A.I., and you can use 6x-14x with no problems. Works for me just fine.

Although, it does nothing for the shadows. BF2, the game I hate to love. :( Its by far my most played game, but some drawbacks really annoy me. The shadow issue, and the no real WS res issue.

yup forcing AA through the nvidia CP works for me in bf2

its funny, the shadows look fine at some angles, they look nice and high resolution, but if you move to a different angle then they get all jagged and low res looking

Okay, cool. So riddle me this: if Cat A.I. must be disabled then there is presumably some performance loss (or rather none gained) but is there the possibility of making it up with better efficiency of driver AA as opposed to game AA? Ergo, equal performance but better quality? Or is that just dreaming?

FP subscriber only.. grrr :|

Sorry, Ive been a FP subscriber for years. I dont care to pay $7 per month, me not wasting my time looking for a good link to a new demo is worth that. And the betas are nice too.

btw, the Titans own. :) Too bad 2142's res stops at 1600x1200. Its time for Dice to grow up, and support real resolutions.

It is a beta version isn't it? Hopefully they'll get their heads out of their arses and do some widescreen resolutions for the actual product. Wasn't their reasoning for doing that with BF2 to keep the playing field of view even? They thought it would be an advantage, yet didn't prevent those with a $400+ card from using transperancy AA or even regular AA for that matter, something that can be very handy when in battle.

I've learned that Dice and EA are horrible game developers and they really don't know what they're doing. I'm not saying I do of course, but that's why I'm playing the games instead of making them.

I doubt it. BF2 tops out at 1600x1200 too. They didnt even support 1280x1024 until a patch, well after release.

I dont know what their reasoning it, but there is zero excuse. Claiming that WS gives you an advantage is silly. There is a "draw distance" option to, that doesnt precent people with high end PC's to set it, and other settings to max, and people on lower end having to drop settings.

Good ATI promo video, but it doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. It basically hilights the issue of texture crawling and jaggies present without AA, and then makes you realize that right now in games that support HDR, you need an ATI card to keep the AA on.
