Looking for some advice on where to get the best bang for my buck on
an impending upgrade. Here is the current rig
AMD TBird 750
Asus A7V133
128MB CL2 RAM
10gb IBM 7200rpm UDMA33
3dfx Voodoo3000
WinXP RC2 (for work) and Win98SE (for fun) dual boot
I have this desire to try adding a pair of 20gb 7200 rpm drives as
a RAID0 array on my A7V133, and upgrading the RAM to 384mb. I seem to think by
getting better throughput from my disks I'll notice a significantly faster machine.
Disks are generally the slowest part of a system, correct?
What I would really like to do is ditch SDR, and go with the Sis735, 256 DDR
and one of the AMD 266 Tbirds. I'll still add one more drive for extra storage,
and this would be a little more money. Heck, after the recent KT266A release,
that looks like Via's update chipset would be worth the wait.
I do some 3d gaming, but mostly office work and web surfing. Any other thoughts
from folks who have tried some of these paths? What has worked best for all of you?
Thanks is advance for your expertise
