Ok i just got a brand new IBM Thinkpad T42.. Specs:
1.7 ghz dothan
512mb ddr ram
64mb Radeon 9600
15" 1400*1050 monitor
etc..

Anyway, i have some questions regarding it..

1) When i play doom 3 (only game i've installed so far but i imagine it's the same for all games) at resolution less than 1400*1050 i get black borders at the endges of the screen, ie the game doesn't stretch out to fit to the monitor.. Any idea how i can make it do that? PS i'm using Omega drivers for my card. My friend suggested fn+spacebar but that didn't work.. My old hp laptop had a bios setting for it, but after a quick search in bios i didn't find anything to enable it..

2) Ok WOW. This computer comes with like 20 IBM programs that loda up at startup lol.. What ones can i turn off?

And, i did a doom 3 benchmark..
My desktop computer is 3.4 ghz p4, 1gb ddr ram, overclocked radeon 9700 pro, and using the same config on both machines i got 55 fps timedemo on my dekstop and 44 on my laptop.. VERY nice imo, i wasn't expecting to be able to play doom 3 tbh :)

I'm guessing you got the 2379DXU? I was considering that model but I went for a different 14.1 model instead.

It depends on what your needs are.

You can get away with disabling the:
1) Active Protection System if you backup your data frequently
2) Access Connections if you only have your laptop using one wireless LAN and don't need to quick switching ability.
3) I'd get rid of Norton and replace it with a less resource hogging AV.
4) Definitely get rid of the IBM message center as I find it unnecessary.
5) Also the WinDVD is unnecessary because you can just load it yourself.

Those are just the tray icons.

1) Digital line detect if you don't ever plan on plugging into a hotel room phone line.
2) Keyboard remapper if you don't care about adding a Windows key.
3)Sonic update manager is unnecessary.
4) I'd leave the touchpad stuff as it adds functionality.

Tran, I'm considering buying pretty much the exact same notebook. PM 1.7 Dothan, 40GB 5400RPM, 512MB, 15" SVGA, 9600 64MB. How do you like it? If you would PM me with your overall impressions I would be most grateful.
