Some SuSe Linux 10.1 Questions

Well I've been using SuSe 10.1 on and off now for a bit and so far it's not bad. I only have a few issues with it that are keeping it from becoming my regular operating system. I'll post them on an issue by issue basis.

1) I have installed the latest ATi drivers for my Radeon 9800 Pro and run the aticonfig tool as root. Unfortunately I can't quite seem to get my dual monitors working the way I want and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Right now I have my monitors both running but I can not drag applications between the two. Whichever monitor I start the app on it has to stay there. I also can't seem to get my CRT running at the refresh rate I want. I put in the correct settings insofar as rate ranges go but it always defaults to the lower range. Working with a Dell P780 for the CRT and it will run 1024x768 at a refresh of 100Hz but I can't seem to get it to run at that rate.

2) I can't seem to access my shares the way I want to on my Windows 2000 Server. I logged on to the server as the user that initially created the shares and while I can access the files and copy them over to my local drive I can not do things like play mp3 & movie files from the shares. I'm sure it has something to do with permissions but I'm not sure how to correct the issue.

3) I subscribed to Transgaming Cedega and it seems to be a good program. Unfortunately with EVE Online there are times when it will unexpectedly crash. Anybody have this game running under Cedega? If so what settings would you recommend that I run this game with?

Thanks for any and all help.

This is probably a limitation of the apps you're trying to use against the files on those shares. There's no universal UNC concept like there is in Windows so if you double-click on a file in say Nautilus it passes the URL (smb://server/share/filename) to the app but if the app doesn't know how to use the Gnome VFS it fails to find the file. You would probably be better off just mounting the shares with something smbmount/mount.cifs or fusesmb. They'll provide 'normal' path names and any Linux app will be able to access them.

I've never use the ATI config stuff, hell the only ATI card I've ever used was an onboard RAGE at work, all of my stuff is nVidia.

Haven't setup dual monitors before, but you should probably use the sax tool. Go to Yast / Hardware / Graphics Card and Monitor and look for dual head mode.

I think Nothinman pretty much answered this. It'd be best to just install smbfs and mount the directory as a samba filesystem. If you would like more info I can explain how to set that up.

Sry can't help ya there. 🙁 Try asking on the transgaming forums.

Last time I used sax unfortunately it didn't help at all. I'll look at it again after I backup my xorg.conf file.

There's probably two ways to setup the dual monitors, ATI probably has their own thing like nVidia has TwinView and xorg has Xinerama. SAX will most likely setup Xinerama since I doubt they put any support in it for the ATI and nVidia special cases. Whether that's a good thing or not, I have no idea.
