Some sound advice

I'm currently using Realtek ALC650 AC'97 onboard sound on my ASUS motherboard for sound performance.
Not sure what speakers I have, except that the pair have a number on them: -691C. And they are old.

How would you rate this pair in terms of sound quality? I know very little in regards to sound.
The combo sounds fairly decent to me, but I have nothing to compare them to. 🙂

I'm probably far from an 'audiophile' ~ I don't listen to much music on the computer except on the games I play.
Do you think I would see a very dramatic improvement in sound quality from upgrading to either a relatively new sound card or speaker set?

We have three other speaker sets in the house from our last three computer upgrades that I have been switching around. To be honest, they all sound about the same to me, with only one of them sounding a bit clearer.

If you upgraded to a via envy card or a turtle beach one and some better speakers it would be noticeable. But i'm not sure if it would justify $180 in cost or such.
