Got a G3 at work. I've never used a mac in my life, but someone needs to fix it.

Switch it on and nothing comes up on the display. I found one thread somewhere suggestiung holding down the "program" key whilst booting up - I don't even know which key that is, can someone help 🙂

Or if you have any other solutions or ideas I'd like to hear them!

cheers,

- seb

Boy, did you come to the wrong place for help!

Try that key, and if you have the OS cd, try putting that in.

What do you mean by no display? You mean nothing comes up on the monitor at all?

when you turn it on hold down Command+that weird apple key + O + F (all at the same time). This takes you to open firmware (their equivalent of a bios). If you see a white screen with a > prompt, that means your display works and you can obtain an OS cd and boot off of it by putting it in the cd drive and holding "C" while it's booting. If you don't see the white screen, the display is probably broken.

They gave you a mac that nobody'll support?

Heh.

Anyway, boot the OS CD in the drive and as it's booting up, hold down the "c" key. It should boot from the CD. Don't ask me what to do after that, I don't have a clue.

Just a hint. If it bursts into flames and is a burning slag-heap on your desk when you come back from lunch, Steve Jobs will not be interested in having you be on the next "Switch" commercial. 🙁

Shouldn't tech support at work fix it? Or are you tech support? 😀

The man has a point.

No display, or no poweron at all? If the light comes on orange, goes green, then dies, you probably lost the flyback or analog convertor on your board.

Again, MacWorld would know more.

Tech support is one guy (well, we're ALL technical really) and he has much better things to do. I'm very technical, just have never used a mac before, and someone needs to use it, so I thought I'd try and fix it.

The display does nothing at all, not even a flicker. I've tried several monitors. That said, does it need a special apple monitor, or will any old monitor do?

Also, try and hook up an external display.

Does it make the classic Apple startup noise when you turn it on?

No.... should it? 🙂

It definitely should make a noise when it is turned on. If it is not, you may need to call Apple for support.

Doesn't sound good.

What type of iMac is it? There should be two buttons on the side of thge case, power and reset (or similar). Hold the reset while booting.

Well it definately comes on, power light on, PSU fan going. Will bring my allen keys in on monday and take it apart.

It's a G3. Whic may not be an "imac" at all, apologies if I've got my terminologies wrong 😉

Here's an easy way to determine, from appearance.

Beige tower, or Richard Simmon's coffee table ornament?

Good god, I thought Macs were supposed to be easy to work with?? That's ridiculous to hold 4 random keys down at once! How would anybody ever remember that? (Not flaming, just sayin')
