Some setiqueue questions...

Hi, all. A blast from the past here...

I'm restarting my seti farm. I've some questions that will help me get up and running again.

1) With setiqueue, does the time setting control both the time wu's are uploaded, as well as downloaded? I.e., if I set it for a specific time, will it only upload completed wu's during that time?

2) Can one setiqueue connect to another? If so, how so? I have setiqueue set up on my home lan. I'd like to set up setiqueue at school and have it connect to the queue I'm running at home rather than directly to Berkeley.

3) Can I "sneakernet" completed wu's from one setitqueue to another? E.g. do something like cache the completed wu's at school, move them to removable media, and add them manually to the setiqueue I'm running at home, and have them uploaded to Berkeley from the home setiqueue?

TIA.

Hey welcome back!!!

OK I will try and help.

#1 YEs it will only transmit when you tell it to.

#2 Normally to link a queue to a queue, you enter the ip addy of the location with the "master" queue in the proxy server block. If you do not have a dynamic address, you will have to get one/ or a redirecter. Finally make sure your router iallows traffic through what ever port you set it up for.

#3 For sneaker netting with a queue all you would do is copy the queue folder to removable media and then place the folder on your home lan. you will have to redirect it to the local ip address of your home queue.

Hope this helps. I know this is kind of vague, if you need more help just ask.

Okay, that was easy (and what I expected). But a followup question comes to mind. Can I set it it to not transmit at all? I may need to, at certain times.

Let's see if I understand this. Say my setiqueue at home can be reached from an internet ip and port of (I'm making the ip addy up) 213.97.88.125:5517. Then I just put this ip and port in the proxy server block of the setiqueue I'm running at school? Sounds easy enough.

If you do not have a dynamic address, you will have to get one/ or a redirecter. Finally make sure your router iallows traffic through what ever port you set it up for.
Well, I think you meant that if I don't have a static ip. Actually, I don't. But my connection renews its ip address every few hours, and it never changes. It might as well be static. (Yes, if I ever was offline long enough, I'd probably lose it. But that hasn't happened yet.)

#3 For sneaker netting with a queue all you would do is copy the queue folder to removable media and then place the folder on your home lan. you will have to redirect it to the local ip address of your home queue.

You lost me with "you will have to redirect it to the local ip address of your home queue." Looking at the connects of a queue folder, I don't see any pointer in the .ini file to a specific ip address.

Thanks for the help.

Soon as I get home, I'll look at my config in regard to item#2. Currently, I have my own SetiQueue at home pointed to wirelessenabled's queue - which is presumably then pointed to Berkeley. I set this up when TDS Metrocom DSL customers(like me) were having issues connecting to Berkeley a couple weeks back. 🙂

Welcome back bazilla.

On #3, you can indeed take WU's from your school to home. Under your SETIQueue folder, you'll find a "Client" folder. This folder would contain the results from your PC's. There should be two files with the same start name (different extensions) for each completed WU. Simply stop your queue, cut and paste those WU pairs to another location (to burn onto CDRW, example) and then restart the queue. Take those WU's to the other queue (home for instance), stop the queue, paste them into the "Client" folder. Restart queue. (Note: You may have to make sure that these files are not marked "Read Only" after they are copied from the CD. Select all the files, right click and turn off the "Read Only" attribute for them)

As for feeding WU's to your system, you'll notice several (maybe one) folder(s) in your queue folder that start with User*....under those folder(s), there will be a Queue folder starting with Q####. Stop your queue, go into that folder and cut and paste the pairs of WU's out to another location. Again, burn onto CDRW, etc. Take them to the other queue (at work, etc), stop that queue, paste the files into the Q#### folder, (Note: You may have to make sure that these files are not marked "Read Only" after they are copied from the CD. Select all the files, right click and turn off the "Read Only" attribute for them), the restart the Queue.

I have done this with my work queue in the past. You may have to start, refill, drain, again your home queue to get enough WU's for your other systems though.

Hopefully not too confusing! 🙂

Okay.. yeah, regarding #2, just go to Settings --> Queue Server. Then for Connection Type select WinSock Proxy, and put in the name or IP address of the Queue server you want your home server to connect to, along with the port.

In my case, it reads:

Proxy Connection...www.otisace.com...Port...5517

Hope that helps! 🙂

PS: Sorry it took so long to reply - I got an emergency call by a friend of mine to help out at one of his client's offices(law firm) who got hit real hard by the recent W.32 worm.

The really amusing part is that the "bean counters" for the firm nixed the enterprise anti-virus package citing the low probability of the firm getting a virus. :Q I suspect some heads may roll. 😉

How the HECK can a bean counter know if there is a low probability of getting a virus or not?

Obviously, they took shortcuts with the firewall too.

Dude, you don't know the half of it! Firewall.. what firewall?!? Apparently, one of the recent hires in the firm had disabled quite a few items in order to get his KaZaa working!! :Q Yeah, you read that right.

Seems he also has a HUGE mp3 collection on one of the network drives!! I'm seriously wondering how that's gonna play especially in light of all the RIAA stuff going on. 😕

Oh, don't get me started. :|

Only the next to last sentence! All the rest, about how to move the wu's from one queue to another, made sense. But what you say about "refill, drain, again your home queue to get enough WU's for your other systems though" lost me. Are you saying that adding a bunch of completed wu's to my home queue will mess with the rate at which it downloads new wu's? How do I "refill" or "drain" my queue?

There is a folder called user.########. In this folder is user.ini. Open it and change INSANE to yes. Now you can control exactly how many WU's you want the QUEUE to maintain. Fo instance I have 2500 on mine that I transfer to and from work.

I'll bet they never heard of a little thing called mbsa (Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer). I run it regularly, and had my lan servers patched for the DCOM/RPC hole well before any of this hit. I've got the enterprise version of Nortion on the lan too, but I'd rather be proactive than reactive.

Okay, two more questions:

What does this "INSANE" setting actually control?

Where do you then control exactly how many WU's you want the queue to maintain?

-baz

In both the html and window mode for each queue you can either set a min/max # of days to cache or you can override those settings and choose your own min/max. I chose min 2500 max 3000 and it maintains around 2700 queued WU'S 🙂

Sorry, what I meant was turn off the queue...drain (as in burn the WU's to CD), turn on the queue and it will now download new WU's (because you removed the older ones)....you can then burn those onto CD (removed) and do it all over again. However, the INSANE idea seems better...set it to what you want and get enough to fill your work queue! 🙂

Yeah, lots of turbulence in my life the past 18 months or so. We'll see if I can get back to my old levels of production, about 220-250 wu's a day, as I recall. I'll be bringing the clients online in stages. Did 46 of the fastest 'puters today (30 1.6 Ghz P4, and 16 2.4 Ghz P4). That's all I'll get to for at least a week or so.

Sorry if I am belaboring the obvious. In the html mode (I've already installed setiq as a service, so I don't have access to the window mode) I see the following options for queue size settings:

Min Queue Depth days
Max Queue Depth days

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Min Low Priority Queue Depth days
Max Low Priority Queue Depth days
Max Low Priority Queue WUs

Except for the last, I don't see a setting that controls the size of the queue in wu's, only in days. I don't see any max min settings for wu's. Should I?

Can I also disable uploading results for a while, while allowing clients to continue to draw wu's from the queue? Could this be done through the time setting?

Thanks for the help.

I got the number up to 70 computers today. I had to go into another lab fix a computer, so while I was at it, I ran my little script that installs the seti service and configures the clients on the other computers in the lab. These were some of the older, slower computers (naturally I started with the fastest). Still, it all adds up. 🙂 :wine:

RL has its ups and downs, but for now is pretty good. Now if the summer would just end. I'm ready for some cool weather! Since reinstalling seti on the five computers in my office here at home, I've noticed a definite increase in the ambient temperature in the room. It is probably 90 F in here today. It is hot enough that I'm actually worried about my cpu temps running seti. I hope the weather breaks soon, but we're looking at near 100 F temps for the next several days. :disgust:

Pitty you can't collect the heat to contribute power towards an air con unit😉
I see you did 187WUs yesterday ,nice start!:Q😎
