The short story, a bit sparse on details since I'm tired and have to get some sleep, is that my mom and I went to visit my grandparents (her parents) since my grandmother is not doing well. A combination of dementia (sp?), "cardiac events," and other medical things that I don't understand have lead to her recently deteriorating condition, and given the uncertainty, we left on very short notice. That, coupled with the fact that my aunt with whom we stayed has AOL, was why I didn't post anything before or during my departure.
As of right now, she seems to have stabilized, though she has good days and bad days. We were fortunate that on her good days, she was coherent enough to carry on a meaningful conversation, which was very comforting especially for my mom. The bad days involve events such as her passing out after getting up and going to the restroom (due to frighteningly low blood pressure - she's not supposed to be getting up), or several relatives trying to keep her in bed while I ran to get a nurse to fetch the accessories needed so she wouldn't have to get up to go to the restroom, trying to avoid triggering one of the former episodes (the stubbornness that runs in the family combined with short-term forgetfulness made it very hard to explain why she couldn't get up!).
At this point I can't think of much more to say, but it is comforting to us that my grandparents are in a very good nursing center, and that we have other relatives that live near them who check in frequently (we are 800 miles away so visits are sadly not often at all). 🙁
Enjoy time with your family while you have them, because that may not be possible tomorrow. :brokenheart:
