Many of us have experienced that with college football. Why would I want to experience something like that at a boring game when I can experience it at an exciting game?

then why are you still watching football, where there are 5 seconds of action for every 30 of in-action?

Simple: we invented our own version of football that is far more complex and exciting, and we can actually afford the expensive equipment required to play the sport.

IMO american football takes far less skill to play, and is far simpler to play. Running a series of choreographed plays and hoping the working out doesn't compare to improvization.

As a Boise State fan for several years (I lived up there for a while) I can tell you BS....There was so damn much action just in the last 2:00 of that game (although it DID take like 15:00 for that 2:00 to play out....)

That game was incredible, one of the best ever.

Luckily I can now see it whenever I want, whereas 25 years ago the most I got was 30 minute Bundesliga highlights on Sunday afternoon from 3:30-4 on PBS.

What strikes me as funny, though, is while the rest of the world simply ignores American football, the soccer hating American sect take every opportunity bash it into the ground for being so horrid and boring. I don't really quite understand why that is. Is someone forcing them to watch a game they don't like? When NASCAR comes on I simply change the channel...

You either get it or you don't? You fvcking twat.

Are you offended by what he said? Its true, you either get soccer...or you don't. The people that can watch a game understand the game, they get it. Americans seem to watch the ball a whole lot...most of the action in soccer (at least in my eyes) is away from the ball. The runs, the defensive positions, the spreading of the field to a quick collapse. Its beautiful to watch IF YOU GET IT. If you do not...well, you dont see it.

No, that is simply not true, yet you and others continue to babble on about it.

Its like saying "You either get Nascar or you don't."

No, I fully understand it, I just don't enjoy watching it on TV.

So yeah, I am offended because the statement is simply dumb, not because he is implying that I don't understand the goddamn sport. A lack of understanding isn't why I don't watch it.

Fact is, we tend to enjoy what we grow up with. At some point in history, Soccer (football, whatever) won out in Europe, and then Europe helped to spread it around the world. In the US, Baseball (which I also find boring to watch), Football, and Basketball prevail (Hockey too I suppose, but not as much). Each generation grows up with it, and the popularity continues.

If I had grown up without those aforementioned sports being so popular in the US, but instead a major professional league for soccer, then there is a good chance I'd enjoy watching soccer.

I think you need to take your meds if you are offended by that simple statement.

I think you need a dose of common sense if that is the only think you could think of to say.

No I was not actually offended. Who the hell would be? A fvcking care bear? I just went along with the offensive bit as a joke (hence why I said it wasn't the actual statement that offended me, but how stupid it was).

What you said wasn't offensive. However, it was mind numbingly retarded. There is obviously a difference.

I guess the reason for the venom is that they have been telling us for 25 years soccer will soon be as big here as in the rest of the world. The problem is that Americans have choices and are not forced to like soccer or forget about sports. If you add up all the sports fans from all the different sports in America it would make soccer look like a quilting bee. I say look at basketball, how long before it begins to take over some of the fans of field running (soccer).

Football is the most popular sport in the world, bar none. Basketball doesnt come close and neither does american football. US is just too small...

cuz even if we win in soccer we lose. people would think of course usa win, usa is superpower and the anti american sh*t would fly. if we lose the anti american sh*t would go nuts. more death to america!! world sports is way too political, its best we stay as far away from soccer as possible.

plus why follow? we can do our own sports. soccer isn't even fun to watch, its boring as sin. we play it on the school yard so its not due to lack of exposure, we just don't care for it. and well, fat americans already spend too much time watching sports, adding one more is stupid.

5 easy steps to make soccer more appealing...

1. Shrink the field to roughly 90 feet long by 50 feet wide and cover it with a hard laminate surface.
2. Replace the goals with metal rims on 9 foot poles.
3. Make the ball slightly larger and paint it brown.
4. Remove the goal keepers and divide the remaining number of players by 2.
5. Instead of players using their feet to move the ball, let them use their hands.

Its really nice to see some people still see "the light"... There is a reason football (AND NOT SOCCER, AMERICANS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CALL IT SOCCER) is by far the most popular sport in the world... You dont like it because you arent watching it the way you should... The fun in football is not about seeing goals being scored..

There can be horribly boring games that end in 3-3 or something... Goals = nothing to do with fun... Similarly, there can be very fun games that end in 0-0... It depends on whether the teams play a very open game (which tends to be fun, with lots of attacks and opportunities for goal) or a very closed and tactical one, which usually is very boring since they dont get past mid field...

Either way, the fun is in those opportunities... the excitement of every attack "YES THEY ARE FINALLY GONNA SCORE......... NOOO HE FAILED WHAT AN IDIOT" and having only one 15 min break helps tremendously... I hate the constant breaks on american TV.. its horrible.. here in europe you get a comercial every 30 min or 1 hour at most, which is much better since I hate being constantly interrupted!

You are correct. The fact that few goals happen compared to other sports like basket or football where the score can hit the 100s is exactly the reason why people all over the world love the game. The reason is: it's incredibly hard! Some of these guys can do things with their feet most people couldn't do with their hands.

If you play a game where you have hundreds of opportunities to score, the single action is never really decisive. In football, when you are 0 to 0 with 5 minutes before the game ends and you have an opportunity, you have the whole game in your hands. This gets people excited.

It's true that now the game is more tactical than it used to be, but in the end there's always space for the genius that creates something that simply was not possible to envision. This creates an energy, a pathos, a drama that sometimes approaches pure poetry.

The hoolingans' problem is a shame. But football is what happens in the field. Have a look at what these guys can do.. here's some of the greatest:

Diego Armando Maradona: El Pibe de Oro, la Mano de Dios. The man who came from nowhere to win everything. Maybe the greatest ever.

It's not a matter of intelligence. It's a matter of experience. I don't get cricket because I have not spent enough time watching it. Most Americans are the same with football.

or maybe people just don't enjoy it? why spend time with something if you don't enjoy it?

i mean i see baseball on TV all the time and i still don't like it.

but i do agree that a lot of people who don't like soccer will bash it big time and say "american football is better and soccer sucks" instead of just letting people like what they want to like. but it also goes the same way. the majority of the people who like soccer and hate football are always saying "american football sucks, soccer is the real football".

it reminds me of the PS3/Xbox360 fanboys.

Oh yes. I am not saying everybody should love football. I am just saying that a lot of people pretend to have an opinion on something they do not know.

I don't watch cricket, but I would never say it sucks, because I never really try to educate myself about it. Conversely, I used not to like American football because I did know anything about it, but after spending some time watching it with people explaining it to me I now at least understand what's going on on the field and I quite enjoy it.
Cycle races instead, I love the poetry and incredibly rich and dramatic history of the sport, but no matter how much I tried I cannot enjoy watching it.

To each his own.

i just think it's stupid on here that people get so offended when people say "soccer is boring" and then someone replies "well you just don't understand the game that's why you think it's boring!" when it has nothing to do with that.

sure not understanding the game can make someone not want to watch it or not care for it, but I agree they should not talk crap about it either if they do not understand it. but thats not whats going on here. people are getting offended just because someone says soccer is boring.

if a fan of soccer cannot understand why someone may find it boring then they too are not understanding of the game. i mean i play golf. it's probably my favorite sport to play and i love to watch it also.

does that mean i get mad if someone doesn't like it or says it's boring? no, because I can completely understand why someone would think watching golf is boring. it's slow as hell to watch, even though they are constantly showing people make great shots. the main appeal of watching it is because if you play golf, you can appreciate how fvcking good these guys really are at the game.

I find American football more entertaining to watch. There's plenty of off the ball movement/ tactics to look for and it's similar to soccer in the respect that theres not a goal scored every 2 minutes. When I watch soccer I feel like the ball just gets passed around for most of the time w/ no real threats to the goal. And shootouts are just silly, it's more or less a guessing game

you wanna know why soccer is so popular around the world? because it's cheap as hell to play, all you need a round-ish object to kick around

That was exactly my point. The fact is, I wasn't going around saying American Football is boring, because I could realize I knew not enough about it to have an educated opinion. I am not saying everybody here who says football is boring does it for the same reason.
But when you have comments like "they should get rid of off-side rules" it really makes you wonder...

Kids have been playing soccer here in the US for a couple decades, yet as they get older they seem to outgrow the sport and move on to basketball, football and baseball. All you soccer fan keep holding your breath waiting for it to take off here in the states, if it ever happens it wont be for a good long while. Yes we understand the game, no we still don't care for it because we have other choices. And there are great athletes in every sport, do you really think if the best america had to offer played soccer all their lives the rest of the world would have much of a chance?
