I was given a laptop with Win NT that has 2 drives formatted with 2gb each with Fat 16.
Also in the boot loader there are the following options: Win NT, Win NT(VGA mode) and MS-DOS (6.22)

First question:

I know the drive is bigger than 4gb, and there is unformatted space, how do I go about retreiving that space?
Also can I check how big the whole drive is?

Second question:

I want to make another drive letter and put win 2000 on it. I don't want to screw up the existing C&D drives though... I would like however, to be able to have the boot loader show "Win 2000" as a choice on it.

Many thans for any helpful info

Windows NT only supports FAT16 or NTFS. If you want larger drives than 2GB, you will have to go with NTFS.

If you want to retrieve the additional space left over after the 4GB (say the drive is 6GB and you have 2 GB remaining), you will need to partition and format it. You can add another partition (so long as you have room), without affecting the contents of C: or D:. You can then install Win2K on the newly created partition. Win2K is smart enough to detect WinNT and make the appropriate boot menu entries.

You might also want to try Partition Magic instead of FDISK.

Since you have MSDOS 6.22 there, you can check the size of the disk with FDISK.

Note that if you want to run MSDOS, you must keep C: as FAT16.

Something fishy is going on.
In MS-DOS mode, I cannot run fdisk, nor can I find the file anywhere on the computer
I can't even run a CHKDSK command.
When I type in VER it says DOS 6.22.... Is this realy DOS 6.22???

Any way to check in Win NT as to how much unformatted space left?

You may just have the MSDOS 6.22 Command.COM and nothing else instead of a complete MSDOS installation.

Since I can't remember where to go in WinNT, I can't give you exact directions...:(
