Some Questions I Need Suggestions....

Hello,

I joined anandtech on 2/29/2004 as a somewhat noob (still am). I had built a system with a friend in 1997 and only done minor parts upgrades since them (always bought systems). Anyway the system I have now may be on its last legs?

In the mornings (after the system has been off all night) the computer will start to boot and then powers off by itself. I usually have to spend an hour of reboots (pauses in between power on and off by unplugging) before the system is up and running. Once I get the system up it is usually good the remainder of the day, even after shutting it down for a couple hours? Does this sound like the 300 w power supply (generic) is dying?

I have been holding off on my next system since I joined these forums. I joined just to ask some questions about Alineware 😛 After reading mechbgons guide and seeing how helpful everyone is with advice I was going to build a system from the ground up!

Questions:

1. What do you think is wrong with my computer?

2. I have been waiting to build my dream system, would you build now or wait? (waiting on PCI-E for AMD, Ultras and Platinum Editions that are $500 and in stock, 90 nm AMD's or at least an FX-53 or 3800, and new seagate NCQ drives 7200.8)

3. What time frame do you think I'm looking at to build a system with those parts I'm waiting on from newegg?

4. Has anyone here ever bought from Mwave? They have a bundle deal (if I need to buy soon) with a 3800+, ASUS 939 mobo, and farcry game for $700 (retail cpu).

5. Last one does anyone know of a bundle deal (w/ farcry... a game I'd like to play) with an FX-53? I notice the companies I have seen with the bundle offer are usually getting rid of lower end stock (i.e. neweggs bundles are only socket 754).

Thank you!

If you guys think I should buy now I will have a post coming on some product recommendations.

AMD 1700+
768 Mb DDR 2100
60 Gb Hd
Radeon 8500 DV 64 Mb
and your mobo/psu is..?

I would try another PSU, also make sure your temps are ok, and that your cpu fan is spinning freely, and hasn't collected a lot of dust.

Wait until the 90nm AMD 64's come out in October time frame with PCI-express board or even Nforce4. The new 90nm core has SSE3 extensions and seems to perform 5-6% faster from what I have seen online at equal speeds compared to the 130nm cores. Hopefully it will also provide better overclocking. The only drawback is the FX-55 will still be 130nm so I would get the plain jane 90nm D stepping AMD 64 at 4000+ and overclock!

Yes, Yes, Yes 😉 Also backup data... NOW!

Apologies for the delayed reply 🙂 I had to leave the house yesterday and wasn't able to boot up my computer until now 😛 (only five tries).

Mobo: EP-8KHA+
I know it's old and way past it's prime but it has served me well for the last 2 1/2 years 🙂

Power supply: Allied 300 Watt

I'm thinking it must be the powersupply?

Hi Blain & Stevty,

Thank you for the advice. I opened my case up yesterday and blew out all the dust (not too much there). I think as you guys have said the powersupply is dying. It is almost if there is some kind of charge the capacitors are supposed to be holding and it takes them a while to do it???

The temps are all fairly cool... you can touch the thermaltake 5 heat sink with your finger and it's pretty cool?

Backing up data now and ordering my new powersupply. Probably just a 350 watt solid brand PSU.

Thank you!

Sorry for bumping this thread if the problem's already been solved, but I thought that I might add the one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - perhaps the CMOS battery needs replacing? That doesn't totally explain why it would start to power-up and then then power-off though; generally, if the CMOS battery is dead/dying, the system simply won't power-on at all. So I suspect that the problem is one of the other two major possibly causes, failing PSU (Allied is a cheapo brand), or mobo bad caps, or perhaps CPU cooling.
