I just got an 80GB ipod and have read a lot of the apple documents on their website but still have a few questions.

First, can I hook it up via USB without itunes and still play music and videos? Or will that only work for portable data storage? In other words, is itunes required?

Second, my wife got me a Kensington RDS FM TRansmitter. I a not sure if my Honda Accord 2006 supports RDS. I can't seem to find anything on the Honda website since everything is now about the 2007 models. Also, the FM transmitter also has a charger so that your ipod will charge while you listen in your car. Isn't it bad for the ipod to always being charging like that? The apple website says that the battery should be charged onle every couple of weeks and to let the battery run down.

With 3rd party software you can make your IPOD act like a removable hardrive and therefore enable drag and drop capabilities. But Itunes will be alot easier to use.

As far as the transmitter is concerned it should be broadcasting on FM frequencies so any car should be able to pick it up. I have never heard of an FM transmitter that broadcasts on some "special" frequencies.

You can plug in your iPod without iTunes and it will show up. I believe when I forgot to install iTunes I got a windows media player window up for it. I like iTunes better though so I use that.

The battery has an overcharge feature and will stop charging when your batter is already full. The battery in it is much like a cell phone battery which can be topped off without causing issues. I always let it run down to 0 every once in a while just because.

The FM transmitter sends a standard FM signal which any tuner can receive. It's usually on a selectable frequency (so you don't interfere with a station in your area). I'm not familiar with that particular model so I can't tell you anything specific about it.

Unless you install a 3rd party firmware iTunes is a requirement, but it?s nice software so I don?t personally mind.

Also if you care about sound quality at all I would skip any FM transmitter.

You definitely don't have to use Itunes, I'm using Winamp and it works just fine. However, I don't think you can transfer pictures or videos from Winamp but I'm not sure since about that. As for the battery thing, you just need to make sure that the bsttery isn't constantly charging for weeks on end, that'll kill battery life. Try to at least run it down every week or do to maintain the battery capacity.

I fail to see what's so bad about iTunes...most people have no legitimate complaints about it and I chalk it up to "I hate apple" excuses.

i have no problem with itunes and use it for putting songs on my mini. i still use WMP though cause i don't like installing anything i don't need. plus, it starts up like ten times faster then itunes for some reason. itunes 6 wa great. 7 OTOH is causing ppl problems. for example, the first time i dl'ed the installer, itunes wouln't start. i downloaded the installler again and everything was fine.

and you don't need to change firmware to put music on it with winamp as far as i know. as for videos, they have to be encoded to match what the ipod supports. i think itunes now does that. otherwise, there's plenty of freeware that will do it.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that.

My god. Get your head out of Apples ass. Some people don't like the software, why is that so hard for you understand. I personally would like my device to function like a portable HDD and not need any other software installed. No DRM, No cute flashy interface just drag and drop into folders.

And there are lots of third-party apps and plugins that handle the iPod just fine. You don't have to use iTunes.

Apple haters always give me a good laugh.

Ok look...what's with the hostility? Did I hit a nerve? DId I run over your dog? Sheesh

Anyway you obviously have no reason to not like iTunes except because you refuse to use it. That's not a legitimate complaint so my statement stands that it works fine which it does. All this iTunes hate probably stems from the fact that you can't use a downloaded song from the iTunes store on another player. That's ok, but since you fail to mention that or any other reasonable complaint I'm done listening to you.

I just said that I choose to not use ANY program other then windows explorer. Just because I don't like the software doesn't mean I am a Apple hater, it just means I DON'T LIKE THE SOFTWARE! OMG! That's just like, so impossible to comprehend isn't it??!!! With my player, I can plug it into my computer and put anything I want on it. Then I can take it to a buddies place and load more stuff on it. Etc etc. All I need is a standard USB cable.

Guess what, my iPods do that too. It's called "Disk Mode".

You've obviously never owned an iPod.

Seems that way. Anyway to the OP, you can PM me if you have any other questions about your iPod and I'll try to answer them.

You came on here spouting about how people who don't like iTunes are just apple haters. That was an idiotic comment that I decided to respond to.

No and for your information smartass I was specifically asking someone why they don't like iTunes. They failed to answer, as you failed to answer "i don't like it" is NOT a good answer at all and just tells me you haven't used it, or just don't like the company that makes it.

I've made my point and I'm done with this thread.

Guess what? You still need a special iPod cable, right? You also need to use a program to switch your iPod to storage mode. Mine is a portable HDD that can play media. But I don't expect the iPod crowd to ever admit that something could be better then their almighty iPod. All hail the iPod!

I think that's a perfectly fine answer. I like winamp to play my music and I like windows explorer to move it around.

But I wouldn't expect iTunes zealots like yourself to understand that...
