Some questions about Borderlands

I picked up the GOTY edition on Steam last weekend for $7 and have been having some fun with single player. There are some things about the game that I clearly don't like but it's still enjoyable.

It's multiplayer that I'm considering trying. My questions are:

Are the saved character server-side or local?
Any major game-breaking cheating?
Are people still playing?
Is it worth even bothering after the game has been out so long?
Anything else I should know?

I appreciate it.

I don't do multiplayer much, but when I do, it is with a few people here on AT.

game-breaking-yes. you essentially host, or are hosted by someone when you do co-op, so if the host has modded a bunch of OP junk into their game, and you pick up some of those drops or they just give you some ridiculously OP gun, it could potentially break your game.

so...best to stick with people you know. Plenty are still playing, and it it fun MP, but I played some 90% of my time single player.

My recommendation is to play with friends, and I do mean people you know whom wouldn't feel like screwing up your enjoyment of the game, or breaking it due to some modifications unknown to you unless you ask. I for one use a third-party program that tricks the single-player to act like a four-players multi-player session, which in turn increases the items drops, quality and of course the challenge since playing under such conditions is meant for a four players party, but playing alone with those conditions is pure fun.

The program is only 65KB in size and it takes a few moments (after the game is launched) to temper in the memory to trick the single-player part, but it works well when the changes apply. I clearly remember downloading that program from the official Gearbox forums, but that was a very long time ago, and the thread along with the program's download link and even its very name is probably no more by now. I still have it in my back-ups however, if anyone wants it let me know via PM and I'll upload it.

PM sent, I'd be interested in it.

It's really best played with people you know. I never enjoyed going into random online games; I actually had more fun playing single player than with that. But local LAN or over the internet with friends is the best way.

The problem is the game gets pretty repetitive. And even though the level cap is 60-something with all the DLC, I've never gotten past around 35-40 because it just gets tedious at that point. Quests are all fetch quests or kill X number of enemies, you can ignore them to avoid getting over-leveled though. And it's hard to play at the higher levels with friends because you usually end up with a bit of a level discrepancy, and if it's more than 3-4 levels of difference then either the higher level guy is killing everything in one hit or the lower level guy is constantly dying.

Yeha..I bought a 4 pack to play with friends and it was fun, but playing by myself I just got bored with it. The same thing over and over, slight harder, in the same looking place over and over and over and over....

This..... OMG this.... I just started FINAL decent right now at level 33..

SOOOOOOO bored... Some "heart stopping moments" but mostly boredom. I cant fathom playing again (Lots of chatter re "play through 2 on the forums)... I dont think I will be doing ANY of the 4 free DLC's.....
I just need to finish so I can justify picking up the Witcher 2.... I have FOUR games going on right now.....

Borderlands... GOTY
LA Noire.
Mass Effect 2 (after not neing ABLE to put down ME1)
FF13.......

I cant go for another game till I finish a game...... (In my world) Borderlands started out SOOOOOO sweet. I miseed the "heyday". My kids and their friends all played last October and they played on XBOX.... I bought 3 moths ago on PC..... I soooooooo neeeeeeeed to finish.

The solution to this is pretty easy. Have the lower level players host the game. The game world will gear towards them instead as well as the quests.

I suppose if you do that the host ends up leveling much quicker than the higher level players, eventually catching up?

Good to know.

Borderlands is a lot more fun if you tend to become obsessive over dungeon crawlers (like Diablo) or MMOs. I've got two max level characters in Borderlands (another at 50), and yes... it's very repetitive, but I don't really care.

To me it wasn't too repetitive because my tactics changed throughout both playthroughs as my equipment changed and I fought enemies with different resistances. Also, some areas favored ranged combat (sniper rifle, scoped SMG & combat) while others had up-close enemies where SMGs and shotguns worked well.

For most of playthrough 1 I had no guns that regenerated ammo, so I also needed to switch weapon types (rifle, repeater, smg) so I wouldn't run out of ammo. As a Siren my main weapon type is a SMG which goes through a lot of ammo.

It also helps if you haven't played piles of other shooters. I mostly play RPGs so this is a couple of years' worth of shooter rations for me.
