Some programs/games change my default audio device.

Some programs/games change my default audio device. It's very annoying and I'd like to stop it.

I currently have two audio devices connected. My HDMI cable to my monitor and an optical cable to my receiver. I set my default audio to the optical (TX1) and is usually stays there however some programs and games will set the default to the ASUS connection. I don't want to disable my monitor speakers because I use those for Skype and other VOIP.

How to I stop that?

Also, if anyone knows, I assume that the Asus Monitor connection and the HD Audio HDMI out would be the same connection. I'm not sure why there would be two connection listing for it. I only have one HDMI cable running to my PC.

Specs in sig if you need to know my mobo.

Thanks.

Can you configure within the applications to pick one?

I am pretty sure HDMI would be the go-to default over an optical connection. Now as to why the app doesn't take Windows settings over it's own desires, who knows.

Well, it could be the plug arrangement. What component does the HMDI signal come from (I would guess the video card)?

The ones that shift the default device are the ones that have no options to choose a device in the program itself. I'm trying to figure if there is a way to stop these programs from changing the default device. I'm hoping it's a windows setting.

The HDMI does come from the video card and the optical in from my motherboard.

Corky if you read my post you will see that windows is allowing multiple programs and games to change the default audio device. Since this is part of the operating system I think this is the proper thread. Also, if you would look in the post I made in the other thread you will see that I requested that it be deleted minutes after I remade the post to this thread. Thank you for you concern about double posting but perhaps in the future you could take a little more time to investigate.

Have fun.

Sounds like the AMD driver (or the sound driver) are arguing over who gets to set things here.

Haven't had an AMD card in forever. Do they have anything configurable for the HDMI? Is your video to that screen also HDMI?

I have two monitors one HDMI and one DVI. Here is my AMD Audio panel AMD drivers 14.7 RC. I set it to default the optical SPDIF line but the audio still switches to the monitor when I run some programs. I also noticed that in the AMD HDMI setting window, it will reset to the monitor as the default audio device when I reboot my PC.

I'm using VIA drivers for my sound card. They are always defaulted to my optical SPDIF line.

The only other audio driver I have is for the Sound Blaster chip on my motherboard. You can choose a device but only video card, motherboard or my Microsoft camera.

Is there a way in windows to force a default audio device and force a default communication device?

So, to be sure I am clear here, is this a good reset or a bad reset?

I reset the PC if that is what you mean by good or bad. It didn't crash. If you mean is the audio device switching back to the monitor on a reset good or bad then it's bad.

I also noticed when I enable or disable my eyefinity group it will switch the default audio device to the monitor.

I'm trying to set and keep the SPDIF line my default audio device and set.

Gotcha. Probably the easiest thing to do here would be to try a DVI connection to your monitor, or an HDMI to DVI if your monitor doesn't work, to get around the issue with the HDMI on your video card.

You might want to try a different version of drivers as a costless fix for the problem.

Thanks for the advice but, I need to have audio to my monitor for VOIP programs such as Skype. It's not a PC breaking issue just really annoying. I believe AMD drivers are part of the problem in terms of PC resets and Eyefinity switching the audio. But, I don't understand why the audio would switch on some programs if the SPDIF is set to default in Windows, VIA, and AMD drivers. That's the part that's confusing. If you can think of anything else please let me know.

Thanks.
