I just went to grc.com and did the shields up thingy. It says my comp is accepting Pings and my IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) port is vulnerable. As I said in my last topic I'm kinda a noob at linux but I've ran 3 versions of mandrake (8,9,10) and never had this happen. How do I configure it so I don't have these problems. I dont want to respond to pings and I don't even own a printer. Any help is appreciated even switch to Xbrand Linux.

If you're looking for a good desktop linux distro, Ubuntu is my personal Favorite It's easy, and fairly secure (there was a major security vun/scare recently with some overlooked rouge code, but they got it fixed in a matter of hours after discovery) In terms of securing Fedora Core 5 I wouldn't know where to tell you to start other then reading up on IPtables

I tried to use Ubuntu. I have the Live/Install DVD and it wouldn't recognize my graphics (integrated ATI Xpress 200). It said couldnt Intitialize X would I like to see the debug code and left my comp frozen, not a good experience for me.

EDIT: I have the 5.10 DVD of Ubuntu and I haven't run mandrake on this comp.

That's the one gripe I have with Ubuntu.. It tries to use the open-source nvidia and ati drivers for the latest cards which aren't compatible.. Duh, use Vesa for these newer cards unless there's another compatible driver.. [Have they not fixed this problem yet?? Been there since Hoary..] Suse doesn't have this problem. (Oh and yeah for an endorsement for an X brand of linux, I choose Suse; I love it :D)

As for your problem with FC5, does it install some kind of firewall? Try to yum ipcop or guarddog or check if they're installed. Personally, I would just get a router. Much easier to setup and play with.

Grc.com is full of crap.

Accepting Pings isn't a problem. And your IPP port is fine.

Just make sure that Fedora is fully patched and is kept up to date.

edit:

To turn off the IPP stuff you can, I beleive, do that through applications --> server settings --> Services... Although I don't have Fedora right now so I am not sure.

The service that provides IPP support is CUPS.

Strange.

I thought that cancer, automobiles, old age and death killed people. Odd that.
