Thinking like that is exactly why people continue to be assholes. It's called false justification. Thanks for throwing fuel into the fire. Now if you please...go away and let the rest of continue trying to do our best at being good people.

It is not false Justification. I do not attempt to justify anything. That is just how it is. Just because one may choose to handle something of this level differently does not make them inherently different and/or better minded.

You guys may think you're better than this women JUST because you wouldn't blow much of anything out of getting 500 extra bux, BUT were this say a corporate situation, hostile takeover where is clear advantage to one side, Tell me than that the general trend is not to GOUGE as much as possible.

You're the kids here, not me.

Actually, a lot of people have this thing called "A Moral Compass", and it leads them to want to do something called "The Right Thing", even if it doesn't profit them materially - they profit in another, more substantial way.

Some things in life are more important than money. The best people in this world understand and respect that. People are generally happier when surrounded by those who feel that way. I can't believe you are comparing someone who lost a wedding ring to that of some kind of corporate business take over. If you can't figure out that those two things are far too different from each other to make an accurate comparison then there really is no hope. Your belief in that comparison is your false justification.

I would of just sued her for it. It's my property and I can prove it. I'm sure a lawyer would do it for the 1 grand and I would feel better morally.

It's interesting how the responses in this thread are overwhelmingly in favor of returning the ring with little or no reward, but the responses in the Brinks thread about the missing bag of money were split closer to 50/50. I'm not sure if the difference is the value of the find ($140k vs $4k), or the fact that it was an individual and not a company.

Over the weekend, Gohn got a call from a woman who said she had found the ring. Gohn had offered a $500 reward, but the caller wanted $1,000. Gohn paid it and got his ring back.

Where are the ethics people?

Most people would offer to give the ring back, even if a reward was not offered. The guy was even offering a reward, but this woman demanded more. :|

I think he's lucky to get it back at all. I'd guess a lot of people would just pawn it.

That having been said, I would have just given it back to him for no reward.

ive been in that situation. when i was a teen i saw a lady drop a bracelet as she got into her car. she looked genuinely scared when i skated up to her window, like she was trying frantically to get her car into reverse to leave as fast as she could. when i picked up the bracelet and held it in front of her window, she kind of did a double take at her wrist and realized i was giving her something she lost. i turned and skated off without a word, she followed and tried to give me a reward but i told her no. didnt even occur to me to ask for a reward. my friends gave me shit about that for a long time.

I don't think it is as much about the money as it is what an engagement ring means to a lot of people along with what it obviously means to this guy. I'm sure it also has to do with how much your average Joe has in his bank account as opposed to your average company which is quite a big difference.

Putting a human face on things makes performing "immoral" acts more difficult.

Anyone who would ask for a larger reward is a douche. But I also agree partially with Calculator83, in that the vast majority of people are douches.
