Hi everyone,

I am waiting on a EVGA SSC 8800GT to arrive on tuesday to finish my latest project. A brief rundown on specs goes as follows:

-Corsair HX520
-Antec P182
-Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 (REV 2.0)
-Intel E6750
-Crucial 2 x 1GB DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) CAS4 ( 4-4-4-12)
(Memory is the relabeled NewEgg LANFEST Crucial Ballistix Tracer Kit)
-4 WD 320YS drives (Raid Specific, 5yr Warrenty)
-ASUS|DRW-2014L1T LS SATA.

I will be running XP Pro installed on a ICH9R RAID 10 array. I just had a couple questions.
1. Being that this is my first SATA optical drive I was wondering if anyone had any idea what BIOS settings to set the Gigabyte SATA controller (2 port controller) to get the drive to work.
2. The ICH9R has 6 total slots. If I use 4 of them for my RAID 10 array, can I use the other 2 for ESATA? Do I need to do anything special during the array building setup to do this?
3. If I am running a single GPU, do people still recommend plugging in the PCI-E 12V power input on the motherboard? Gigabytes manual says it supplies the PCI-E with extra power, plug this in when running two graphics cards. Any advantage to having it connected with a single card? Any potential problem running it that way?
4. I have heard that when using a single graphics card one of the two PCI-E slots runs more stable. It was an unexplained phenomenon but it was confirmed by a couple different users. Does anybody know about this? Which slot the top or bottom slot should I install my card to?

Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this and help me out. Also I will post pictures and feed back once I get it all up and running. I am going to start off with stock cooling on everything, including using those Antec case fans. Once I see what works, and what needs improving, I will move to some better/quieter cooling solutions. Plus my wallet needs some idle time, its been running a little hot.

Stobal,

Welcome to the forum.

I'll give a couple of those questions a try...

1. I believe the SATA controllers get their drivers from the motherboard CD when you load the chipset drivers after your initial boot, and not through any BIOS settings. So if you use the CD to load the chipsets, you should be able to just plug the opticals into those 2 slots and they'll show up on the BIOS as installed devices.

2. I don't see any problem using the other 2 SATA connectors for eSATA brackets. I have done that in the past with my ASUS Commando motherboard, which like Gigabyte, didn't have any eSATA backplane connectors. I just plugged the eSATA bracket into a regular SATA port and went with that. One problem I had was that I couldn't hot-swap the external SATA drive - I had to re-boot the computer AFTER I hooked the external drive into the bracket (or turned it on or powered it up) for it to be recognized. Not sure how the Gigabyte will respond...

3. Don't know...

4. I believe you should always use the upper slot (closest to the CPU) for a single GPU.

Hope this helps some, Noel
