Some overclocking/System config advice

Hello all,

I just got done building my first computer (yay) - a 1.33 T-bird 266, 256 meg DDR, on a MSI K7-Master running Win2k. I currently have the processor oc'd to 1400 (133*10.5). I am noticing however that it doesn't seem to be handling multiple things as well - for example, I had an MP3 playing and loading My Computer, and the MP3 "skipped" for a second, which is something I never saw on my old system (P2, 400). So, I am wondering if anyone out there has some experience with this, or some advice, or some setting that I am missing (sort of like, yeah, I remember when I first got mine going and I needed to do this to really get it going...or something...) Perhaps I don't have an ideal oc setting?? I am fairly new to all of this, so I would appreciate what anyone has to offer - I actually hope this is the correct forum to post this...

Thanks in advance!

Delphynx, what kind of soundcard do you have? The SoundBlaster Live! series are noted to have problems with the VIA 686B Southbridge. If you have a SBLIve!, I'd say that that's your problem.

If it is, take a look at the Turtle-Beach Santa Cruz. VERY nice soundcard.

Bond,

I do have an SB Live -- sorry, guess I could have thrown that in - it is a 5.1 Platinum. I do not have those Via drivers installed - everything is the default Win2k drivers at this point besides the sound card and video card (updated Detonated drivers for an MSI GeForce 2 Pro). Any other drivers that I should look at besides those? Are those drivers on the Via website or is there another site that you recommend that has them (and others)??

Thanks for the reply!

Bond,

Thanks for those sites - are all the 4 in 1 drivers the same (I also checked the official Via site, and they don't have the AMD761 chipset listed...do I still use these 4 in 1)??

Also, what does 4 in 1 refer to?? Geesh, so much more to learn...

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, the 4-in-1s install the AGP Driver, IDE Driver, and two others I don't know at this time for I'm pooped. :) Just download them, run the setup and it will install what needs to be installed. Install the AGP in Turbo mode, by the way.

Good luck!

Don't forget you can set the buffer for winamp. Raise it to say 10000ms.. that is what I did, because I to had mp3s skip on be before. Try using another mp3 decoder, and see if it skips as well, then it might be the sb sound card..

I'm not sure if this applies here, but in some cases the PCI slot/IRQ your soundcard is in may be conflicting with another device (even if windows says that there's no conflict).

If the updated VIA 4in1 drivers don't fix your skipping problem then you may want to look in your motherboard manual to see which PCI slots share which IRQs and possibly try switching the placement of your cards. I know I've had that problem several times before...hehe and spent hours swapping card placements to find the "right" one that would work for me...
