Some online vendors can be a little kinky at times.

I placed a large order of over $3000 the other day to build several systems. Since the vendor is within 1hr 40 minutes driving, I decided I would forego their nice hefty shipping charge and go to their WillCall dock and pick the stuff up. I placed the order, gave the credit card number and about 20 minutes later I received the email confirmation of my order. It said for WillCall, to check with them after 5:00pm. Well, I got to thinking; what if the items aren't all in stock? Hmmmmm, better call first. I call and the person I get, obviously speaks english as a second language and was difficult to understand. What I got out of the conversation was; If I wanted to go to WillCall, I had to come in with green cash, that they would not accept my credit card. I said, but I placed the order and got a confirmation. The person said it didn't matter, that's what I would be told when I called to check in after 5:00 pm. Ok, so I said but I want to use my credit card for this purchase. She said; That's fine, but if you do, we must ship, you cannot pick it up. Why is that, I asked? Because the credit card charges us a fee, so we mark up the shipping to cover it, if you use a credit card. I said, I believe that passing the cost of YOUR merchant discount is against your agreement with the credit card processing company. She said, I know......that's why we want to ship, so we can markup the shipping and make it back. I said, ok...nevermind on this order then. I hung up and within 10 minutes had placed an order elsewhere. :Q

You know what, if they adjusted their prices just a little to compensate for their overhead, that would be understandable, but to kink things around, to me just isn't above board. Now I realize that they are ethically challenged.

I don't get the kinky part either. I'm just wondering if they were hoping to pocket some of that cash?

Thanks for the heads up. I have crossed them off my list. I just ordered from ASI and was pleasently surprised. Give them a look see.

That blows. Atacom sounds like a dishonest vendor. I also don't like how they sell pretested CPUs, this probably means that their OEMs won't overclock well since the selection has been picked clean. I still like Mwave for my orders. I've never picked up (kinda far from me) but I heard they lets you pay straight up with a credit card.

Tripleshot, don't you have to have a reseller license to do business with ASI? I'm not there yet.

Windogg, the last time I got a tray of OEM CPUs from them, they had been written on with a grease pencil or something, also mixed weeks. Normally when you buy a tray from a reputable dealer, they will be all the same weeks, or 2 different weeks if you got a split box. Needless to say, I wasted my money, as not a single one of them would overclock. I had ordered OEMs by one or two from them before and had some good chips, but I guess they saw me coming when I ordered 10 at a time. :(

Red, how many LD memory modules have you tested? The only reason I ask is that I bought a module as generic and those were the markings (LD right on chips), but it surprised the hell out of me when it ran at 150MHz. I had my old PIII 450 running at 675 with that ram. It was only sold as pc 100 at the time. :Q That is my only experience with LD memory.

all the companies are like that. If you go to the pomona computer fair in socal, they sell below cost, and keep the tax money as profit from what i've been told

Thats just totally weak, makes you wonder if that guy even knew that he wasn't supposed to say something about the markup on shipping.

I asked a merchant service today if passing along a fee to the customer is against MC/Visa policy and was told yes. So when they told me they markup shipping to offset the cost of the credit card discount, that was in violation of their agreement with the merchant service they use. So, if they would cheat on that, they probably would cheat on their taxes or any other way they can. The cash they wanted me to bring in would probably never be in their business records. :Q
