Renting or buying a used cartridge game, particularly an RPG, and seeing other people's end game save files and being like  while starting my new game. And then always minding the clock on my game as an estimate of how long it should take to get there.

Don't get that on disc based games.

Actually..now that you mention it, I miss the old 50 char passwords. They were annoying..but I would spend hours putting in random things and finding secrets.

Swear it took me 30 mins to write one down because I would check it like 50 times over. Q vs O vs 0 with a terrible font on 256x224 and NTSC RF/Composite and you lost hours of progress.

I miss not having any set checkpoints. You either made it past the level or you didn't.

Speaking of long passwords, as someone who didn't have access to a GBA link cable, it was a real PITA for me to put the Golden Sun 260 character password into Golden Sun: The Lost Age. No, I couldn't put in one of the shorter ones, I had to have all the stuff the crossed over.
