Some notebook battery related questions

I have just ordered a new notebook so I have a few questions because I want the battery to last as long as possible (of course).

1. I have heard that the battery should be charged for 24 hrs the first time. Is this correct or is it just enough that the battery reaches 100%?

2. Does it matter if the battery is fully charged the first time I use the system?

3. Should the battery be connected (or disconnected) to the notebook when using ac-power?

4. Is it important that the battery is completely drained of power a couple of times a month to prolong the battery lifetime?

Hope you who have experiences of this topic want to share your opinions...

1. That is usually recommended by OEMs
2. OEMs recommend that it start fully charged.
3. That is reommended by some makers.
4. With Li-ION batteries, that is not necessary

The average life of a laptop battery is 2 to 4 years - about 3 is good. I always get a spare and then rotate them monthly. They last as long as I have my laptops that way. About 5 years.

1. Just charge it fully.
2. It may, if the charger controller does some first-run calibration voodoo.
3. Realistically it won't matter enough to worry about. I know people that follow both practices (on laptops that are the same model and purchased simultaneously), and battery life is pretty much uniform either way.
4. No. While it's fine to drain the battery now and again through actual use, you should never drain it for the sake of draining it. Large discharges reduce battery life long-term.
