Some newbie questions about power supplies

I rarely deal with cases and power supplies, so 'scuse the newbie questions...

First, can you check to see if the power suppy on your case (with nothing else installed) is working by plugging it in? Will the fan go, or does it only go if something is drawing power?

Second, with a power supply with a voltage selector, the voltage selected is the number showing, right? (As opposed to sliding it toward the voltage you want so the other voltage is showing.)

Sheesh. I feel silly asking these questions. :-D

1) Don't do it, because switching power supplies need a load. Running them without any load could damage something. Also, just plugging a newer ps into the wall will not turn it on, and often, the unit won't even have a power switch.

2) Yes. There are a lot of counter intuitive controls in this world, but that is not one of them.
