some minidisc questions

I'm thinking of getting some high end audio gear for locatin sound pick up but wonder if minidisc is an option.. DAT decks are more expensive but are they really that much better quality (assuming that I record using a high end mixer and use minimum compression on the minidisc). Also, this new minidisc that lets you upload your recorded files over USB - is it crippled by copy protection or can I easily edit the uploaded file? Anyone how much they're going for anyways?

Thanks!

I think sony only lets you do usb but they have the protection.. you can just record real time and then place onto your comp real time, its not a big deal I do it all the time. Any of the higher end sharps with the 1bit amps will do very very well with a good microphone. They run about ~200+ (trust me its worth it), I forget which site has nice mics (a good small one will cost around 100), but look around the forums there is one everyone recommends just can't remember it right now.

you're talking about regular MD. the new format, Hi-MD, will allow USB uploads, supposedly without protection to PCM. no need for real time.
