well... nvidia showed how effective a tool it is for making money... and AMD loves money just as much as nvidia. Frankly, so do I... If I was in their shoes I'd rename the heck out of my products... because as much as I loathe it as a technical minded person, it somehow works.

Where are the actual products that have been renamed? Available?

And yea, renames suck.

Oh man we need to dig up the 9800GT thread. There has been so much crow eaten on this board in the last two weeks, I dont know if there is any room. Haha.

question, anyone here actually boycotting renames? or even letting it affect their purchasing decision? (aka, "I will pay 5$ more for identically performing card from AMD because nvidia renames and AMD doesn't"... well, back when AMD actually didn't)

Because while I loathe it, it was never enough for me to justify spending a single dollar more to go for a company that doesn't do that.

Sad to see AMD jump on the "duping the non-savvy" re-brand bandwagon. Hopefully the renamed products are at least new steppings like many of the nVidia re-brands.

Does that mean the 6770's will lower the prices of the 5770's? ;)

i do sincerely hope so... remember when the 8800GT were hitting rock bottom prices... first after the 9800GTX, then after the GTX250 rename... :) good times, good times.
I bet most people don't even realize that the 5870 is faster than the 6870

more like "duping those who will not even spend 5 minutes performing a simple google search"
What annoys me is when companies do it on extremely cheap stuff... who has the time to research their 1$ detergent...
Although, interestingly enough the kroger brand (and a few others I have checked) chlorine bleach is much more diluted than chlorox... so while chlorox is the "most expensive", in terms of price / unit of bleach it is actually the cheapest...
And I remember there being something similar with dishwasher power (generic powder is diluted crap... doesn't even have enzymes!)
And generic cereal? while not as sweet tasting, it has more sugar (and makes me sugar sick with smaller amounts)... and it also has bad texture, and often time smaller quantities...
And then there are size differences... the biggest container is usually not the cheapest... calculate price per ounce and you will find that the biggest is almost always more expensive (for same company and same exact product)... they know people just grab it out of habit!

bah, I went on a tangent there... sorry for venting...

did they say russia? I thought "specific market" means "OEM builders"... aka... dell, HP, apple, etc.
No, but I thought I read it somewhere, could be wrong. But the OEM market makes sense, OEMs love product numbers, specifically numbers that are bigger than previous numbers. "Upgrade from a 5750 to a 6750 for only $30!"

Oh so it is the OEM fooling people, not AMD. Ha.

Face it, the perception that AMD actually cares about you, the consumer, more than any other company, is fading. They are beholden to stockholders first.

AMD isn't doing anything wrong in my opinion. They are trying to run a business.

I don't get mad at bestbuy for selling $100 Monster cables, because I know I can go to monoprice or anywhere else.

Along the same line of thought, I wont get mad at nV or AMD if some kid buys a video card without first researching it. It really isn't my problem. And let's face it, the people who over-spend subsidize the rest of us who know what we are doing.

Honestly I don't think anything beyond the 6850/6870 and 6950/6970/6990 will actually use the modified architecture.

I dont know why anybody would believe that. ATI renamed the R200 a bunch of times. The 9000,9100,9100SE,9200. Guess it was a good thing the R200 was such a flop. They were able to use the warehouse for years to spit out low end products with that chip.

I don't recall reading anyone ever saying AMD would never do something like this. All I recall reading is people criticizing companies for doing this.

The 9000 was physically different from the 8500, it wasn't the same chip. 8500 to 9000 is more along the lines of 5870 to 6870. The 9100 is a renamed 8500 however, no arguments there. SE cards were just cards with crippled memory bandwidth. 9200 was a 9000 with AGP 8X support.

Renaming isn't a real issue. It doesn't affect the people who actually care what chip is on their video card, because we'll bother to check the actual hardware specs before we buy. Low-end users buying sub-$100 cards are better off with the renamed products assuming that they are comparing currently produced models. The confusion that some of you assert happens with comparing, say, a 5770 with a 6870 can happen in either direction.

You're support to put the site source in the tittle now so people can get their salt shakers ready.

well, since amd stated during the barts launch that they were going to continue the 5700 series for a while it's not exactly going to be a surprise to anybody if they do this. well, maybe to a few diehard amd lovers but in general it seems like a pretty smart move by amd because a.) they will give new legs to 57xx by renaming it 67xx, and b.) nvidia is so uncompetitive in anything below gtx 460 that amd can get away with it. by the way, that's the exact same reasons that nvidia renamed 8800gt/etc a few years ago. nvidia caught lots of grief for it but they also made lots of money so they didn't really care. same thing with amd; they'll make more money and savvy users like us will scoff at people who pay $25 more for 6770 b/c it's a "higher number so it must be faster!!!"
