Marshall thing will go in effect like during President Nixon, There will be undercover officers in civilian clothing with special guns that don't damage the aircraft when fired, they are train not to miss at all. Right now they are making base in atlantic city, nj were agents will be trained. SO next time you fly you might be sitting with undercover agent. Also some bad news Midway airlines discountinued their flights at all. COntinential lay 12,000 workers, northwest and others will lay off workers as well

If I was smart I think I would invest in the railroad industry as our way of transportation around the country may soon change.

Think about it.

The potential for damage by an airplane is clearly evident, the ability to stop such an event is marginal.

The potential for damage by a train is possible but now where near the flexibility of an airplane, the ability to stop such an event is far more achievable.

Just my two cents!

However, railroads are just as slow as car travel. People may forgo all mass transportation, and just go back to cars..

People will fly again.. Not in the immediate future, but we will fly again. Don't get me wrong, there will be some people that will never fly in a plane again, but once again, the chances of something like this happening again are miniscule

I think your both overestimating reaction and underestimating the fundamental nature of humanity which is of course that life must go on and to most, the positive out weigh the negative. We will not see another form of mass transit (IE trains) become the new method of transportation as simply the costs are outstanding and the flexibility is extremely limited. You seem to forget that the US is a HUGE country. In Europe Yes, not in the US. People will continue to fly simply because we have no other real alternative.

On a somewhat similar note, anybody watch the news this morning when they were talking about the state of the Airline industry? It's sad...Continental is planning to cut about 20% of it's airline routes. And they plan to lay off approx. 12,000 employees. That sux. And we kno
that initially, other companies are also going to have to do the same. It is estimated that the Airline Industry has thus far lost or is going to lose approx. $1 billion in revenue. God, that sux soo hard. This is NOT what our economy needs.

People will certainly continue to fly but trains are a real alternative on short routes (and they would take an enormous amount of pressure off airports which are already overloaded).
The Acela train between Boston - NY- DC (I think) is a big success (even though it is still a very SLOW train compared to many other places in the world). Other suitable places would be in CA (LA <-> SF via central valley - and get rid of all those flights to Bakersfield and Fresno) - maybe Texas could use a train service too.
