Some kind of ISP change, all Apple routers having DNS problems

I work in Tech Support for a local ISP. I noticed major issues with DNS resolution through my own Airport Extreme 6th generation (802.11ac). It was resolved after over-riding the default ISP DNS servers and using Google's instead (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4).

It started happening late last week. At the end of the day, on Monday, I learned that the call center had received lots of calls from people with Apple routers experiencing the same issue. I just tested removing the Google DNS settings and the same intermittent problem started happening again. I've notified the network engineers.

Just curious: Compared to every other router manufacturer, what does Apple do differently with regard to DNS?

Are you sure it was using your ISP's DNS servers? Maybe Apple configured the routers to use their own DNS servers by default.

The Airport Utility reported the ISP's standard DNS servers. I'm personally very familiar with those IP addresses and have them committed to memory (I often help customers with manual static IP configuration).
