Some kids have it rough

I send my kids to a city-Catholic school, so they are exposed to kids from different races/socio-economic backgrounds.

One of my daughter's friends has parents who are drug addicts and who are apparently uninvolved in her life. She lives in the inner city with her 60 year old spinster aunt, who seems to be doing the best she can but is struggling. There's an uncle who seems to be helping too.

She appears to be a bright kid but my daughter says she's having a hard time in school and didn't turn in an important project.

To her credit, my 9 year old daughter realizes she has it rough and has gone out of her way to befriend her. Unfortunately, I don't think the aunt can continue to afford to send her to Catholic school so she may be transferring her to a public school.

My daughter invited her to our church on Sunday so maybe I can get involved a bit.

I really feel sorry for some kids these days.

It's a shame. Some people shouldnt be allowed to have kids if they can't take care of them. That little girl is lucky she has so many other people who are looking out for her.. including your daughter!

Im my experience, private schools are the last place to look for "different races/socio-economic backgrounds". They tend to be filled with upper class white people who both care about thier children's education and can afford to send them there. On the other hand, you get all kinds in public schools, it's cheap and easy, which appeals to most people.

Rip: that's a sad story and one that's certainly far from uncommon. Uninvolved parents piss me off.

That said: don't you have anything better to do that sit around and wring your hands about the state of "kids today"? Seems like you start a thread along these lines on a daily basis. Just an observation. 😉

We certainly didn't go out the door dressed like that when I was a kid.

So the kid's parents are on drugs but they can still afford to send her to catholic school instead of public school? Wow. I better start doing drugs myself so I can send my kids to catholic school too.

But seriously, if the kid has problems, its probably better for your kid to stay away from that kid or yours may get influence to do the things that problem children do. When I was young, I had a friend I met at school. Second grade. His parents were divorce and they both smoked. He would come over to my place, ask me to go play with him. We went to the local grocery store were he taught me how to steal cigarettes. Then we'd smoke them in some open fields, he said smoking makes you more mature. I'm glad I got into a fight with him at school one day and never spoke to him again.

Funny, I thought I read somewhere that uniforms in schools prevented this kind of behavior. 😀 😀 😀

Well, apparently from the first post, this isnt always a correct assumption.

Seriously though, it's just sad how people can have kids and then care nothing for them. If you didn't want to have a kid, keep your $#&*#$@ snake in its cage! Or at least wear a condom, fa Christ's sake.

This is kind of the situation with my wife's nephew (her brother's kid), although not as extreme as the first poster's story. The worst thing you can threaten him with is to take him home to his parents. To make a long story short, they weren't ready to be parents, and my wife's mom has said (not to their faces of course) that she hopes they don't have another kid. ::sigh:: He's a good kid in a bad situation, parent-wise. 🙁

About 40% of the kids at this school are Black or Hispanic.

A high percentage aren't even Catholic. Just parents who want their kids in a god, loving environment.

About 50% of the students recieve financial aid.

Whoever posted that all kids who go to private school are white and rich should get out more.

I said "in my experience". I went to a private school for 5 years. It was 90% white, and almost entirely middle to upper class. The nearby public schools were about 50% hispanic, but most farm workers can't afford to spend $400/month on school for thier kids, hence only 5% or so of the private school was hispanic.

I saw a lady on the bus the other day with six children. She was obviously in no position to be raising one, let alone 6.

I wanted to slap her and tell her to keep her god damn legs shut.

And that's strange for me, I'm not usually violent or outspoken. 😛

Umm, yeah... public school must be rough.

When I went to private school in 2nd - 4th before I got kicked out, I did notice that pretty much every kid was white.

And you can grow up to be just fine without your parents being around. Sometimes you only have one parent and she has to work all the time.

I'm guessing you're from an affluent white suburb. Fyi, public schools in most cities aren't that great.

Actually, I went to both a suburban high school and an inner city high school. Neither was that bad really.

If everyone here had the same views this would be an awfully dull forum.

well, i don't have kids yet, sorry i should have put "future" in there. and because kids are naturally soft.
You still haven't cleared up the vast leap of logic you made regarding someone actually having sex with you and eventually bearing your kids. 😉

Yeah, they're nice and soft, especially if you marinate them in some A-1 sauce before tossing them on the grill.... 😉

Yeah, what is your problem Riprorin? You must have had a bad child hood. Either your parents were WAY over-protective, or you were picked on alot in school. Which is it?
