Some keys not registering on-screen when typed

I recently sold someone a PC and they've informed me of a problem with their keyboard...

All letters/characters show up on the screen fine, however on two ocassions, the "b, n, - and ?" all fail to show up. Even after a restart they didnt show up, but if the PC was power off for a while then powered back on, it seems to work fine.

I changed the keyboard for them but was unable to get back the exact thing they had before and now they are kicking up a fuss about this....

Im using the problematic keyboard right now and it works fine so far... is the problem possibly a shorting wire on the keyboard? I popped out the keys and they didnt have any obstruction or anything blocking them...

Any ideas?

What kind of connector does the keyboard have? I've run into this problem with PS/2 keyboards hooked up to PS/2 to USB converters where some letters don't appear on the screen even though the key is pressed. However, there weren't any specific letters that wouldn't come up like in your case. It could be something wrong with the PS/2 port (if it's PS/2 or the USB port (if it's USB). Do you notice anything conflicting with either of those two? Hope this helps.

also are you printing or doesnt something esle that requires an IRQ when this happens? May be an irq error. check your resources

thanks for the replies

the keyboard has a PS/2 connector but is hooked up to a PS/2 port directly, not thru a USB-PS/2 convertor.

nothing conflicting in device manager either.

if the problem resurfaces with the keyboard i left them with i'll try hooking up a usb-ps/2 convertor and see if that may help.
