Some info on the upcoming 512mb GTX..

According to hkepc, the reason for Nvidia to change the PCB for the 512mb GTX is that its going to use the 1.26ns GDDR3 chip used by ATi's X1800 XT.

Could we be seeing 480ish/1500ish 512mb GTX?
Assuming its going to dual slot.

making the assumption that the GTX will be able to scale like that..the 6800U 512mb certainly didn't if you remember...

i think any gain world be more likely to come from the increased speed than the extra 256mb or RAM myself...but like everyone else i'm just speculating...

He has obviously ramped up the clocks as well.

Will Nvidia go for the performance crown and clock it high or keep the same clocks but produce insane number of 512MB GTXs. Which one is it Nvidia?

And if Nvidia decides to bump up the clocks, they will need name it something other than GTX.

Its been proven then the GTX scales pretty good. A dual slot copper cooler is all it should take to get it to run stabile at 500+mhz. The only real concern is what are they going to call it and how much is it going to cost?

The Quadro 4500 runs at 550mhz with its huge cooler, so the 7800 core is definitely capable of some nice clockspeed increases.

They already have had a good run, the 7800GTX go is is already at .09 and the G72 or spring refresh (although they are talking January for it) should be pretty much the same thing clock higher. I don't think we will see any pipelines added or such.

I don't think it's a matter of the card "scaling well", the 512MB 6-series and X8x0 cards didn't see a performance gain with 512MB not because they don't scale well, but because there aren't any games that take advantage of the extra memory. This looks like it might be changing pretty soon.

Guys while this increase in clockspeed and memory will make a noticable difference, it should really be most tangible without AA. IN order to match ATI in AA (IQ and Performance), Nvidia has to update their algorithms they are using (Next gen anyone).

Right now Nvidia still uses fixed particles whereas ATI's are fully programmable. Performance would definitely be closer with AA on, but i still think ATI will do better.

I think the cards are pretty much even as it is now. ATI has a slightly faster card overall, I would say, that is if we took all the benchmarks and averaged them out.

5 - 10% Isn't that important to most people and I doubt it would make or break their games. Right now I think the battle is done on the price end. So long as those GTX's keep going down, I think they will continue to outsell the X1800XT when it hits the shelves.

HDR + AA is a pretty cool thing that the card has going for it. If the cards were the same price, I would go with ATI. The only thing I wouldn't like is the heat that it outputs.

Both are pretty good cards and I cannot wait to see what is next.

yeah but i'm willing to bet Nvidia is alittle sick of being slightly slower than ATI dispite being far ahead timewise and in units sold. This isnt like the 6800U where that core didnt have any headroom left. 512mb of faster ram and a core @ 520 or so mhz is all they would need to keep the performance crown until the R580 ships in 6 months or so. The fact that the x1800xt isnt shipping till november is proof that ATI is blowing smoke on the easy overclockablity of their core. Like their going to sell a PE version with watercooling running at 700mhz anytime soon. They could make a few but they would be so rare that even the reviewers would have a nightmare getting their hands on one. That card would be like a Duesenberg Phantom J, awsome performance far ahead of its time but so rare it would be a myth without a few showings at developer shows....aka i dont think ATI would bother.

Remember many of the reviews I believed tested GTX's much lower then some of the 490 core variants...I think 500 would be neglible to those but a nice increase over the other reviews....The ram speed will help as well as the amount of ram in the higher res high quality test...will it still have the AA perf hit?? LIkely as discussed in Gamingphreeks thread....

I say just slam "EXtreme" on the end of it...Everyone knows that means kick arse.... :roll:
