I came to bring the pain

<< But by far the largest piece of new kit is the airborne laser ? a killer beam fired from a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

The laser carries a massive two megawatts of energy ? enough to power several small towns ? but is so accurate it can pick out and destroy an individual in a crowd 180 miles away without harming people around him.

<< Elite soldiers will carry a new two-barrelled rifle called the objective individual combat weapon, which can even wipe out opponents hidden in trenches or behind vehicles. >>

<< the upper barrel can hurl 20mm shells more than half a mile to explode in the air over the target and unleash a rain of death. >>

What kind of writing is that? A rain of death? Is this supposed to be objective at all?

Very cool article, I certainly have no doubt that the US military will be better equipped than any other military has ever been in any war before. Then again equipment doesn't always mean everything, look at the Revolutionary War. I know times change, but the government better not just rely on our superior arms. I think we could kick bin laden's ass with minimal bloodshed, it takes time and planning, but scum like him isn't worth the loss of American heros.

It should be noted that during the Clinton Administration, our military was gutted, under funded, and demoralized for 8 years. What we have now is probably not half as good as what we had during the Golf War. I know this as my father was in the Army for 22 years. Please call your Congressman and tell him/her to send as much money to Lockheed and Sikorsky as possible. We need the F-22 on the Comanche!

It would be a rain of death. If something like that exploded over you, you would be dead..

Yeah but at least we beat Sadam into telling us the method to his 400 yard drive...

Who made this some bored 12 year old? The wonder gun you are all drooling over is just a bullpup version of the crappy M-16, same small round and all. And yes we have a M-203 grenade launcher that attaches to a M-16 that is better then this "concept" weapon. I fully agree and belive we have the worlds best military, being a vetran of the Marine Corps, but it seems people belive everything anyone puts on the net. Half of the aircraft on that page is Vietnam era or older, and GTaudiophile said we were gutted by Clinton "downsizing." Now is the time to call your Senators and Congressmen and support our Goverment and Military in any way you can.

Do you by chance have any links with more weapons descriptions? These things are cool.

I don't think the F-22 can do much against some terrorist in a hut. I don't think that a large, conventional army can do much good in a land like Afghanistan. The Russians failed, their tanks and APCs were worthless over mountainous and rough terrain. Hopefully, we will do better. The British have the SAS, which are some of best soldiers to do this sort of thing. We have various special forces in our arm forces, I think they are our best answer. Cruise missiles are worthless here. Close support aircrafts such as the A-10, Harrier, and Apache choppers are more important than super sonic jet fighters or stealth bombers.

I doubt the special forces will use that gun. Too bulky, too heavy, and not tested for reliability. My guess would be that there will be 1 or 2 in a group of 20 or so carry such weapons, plus a regular backup.

American special forces use a variety of weapons from all over the world, the standard assault rifle is the M-4 carbine (shortened M-16). Some use the M-14 for long range. The Navy Seals like the shortened version of the M-60 light machine gun as a squad automatic weapon.

the weapon the marine was refering to was simply an m-16 with a grenade launcher (m203) attachment...im in the army, and i've never seen or heard of these weapons, not even from friends in special forces or other forms of military...it would be cool to handle one of those tho =)

I did not refer to it "as" a M-16, just as a concept weapon they want to convert to, but still uses the "same" sucky round (.223) as the M-16. As for sniper rifles as someone was talking about the Marines still use a bolt action variant of the Remington Model 700 in .308, the M-21, as do the SEALS, while the Army has started using a variant of the M-14 also in the .308. But as in all these special forces types they use just about anything they want or fit their application at the time, which they should.

The .50 cal rifle is linked above as "Barrett."
Another Barrett
They just had one out here in the land of no freedom, aka Califonia, at a shot show, kind of a shooting gun show, cool, but $5.00 per round, a little pricey.

I saw a Discovery channel special on that Land Warrior system a few months back, and franly, I wasn't impressed. It's this big heavy crap they gotta carry, and it seemed like it would cause more confusion than anything else. I think a good helmet, a flack jacket and a trusty M-16 would be just as good.
