Your diagram must be inaccurate. Two lanes go down to one during an intersection? ZUH?!

It's correct. 2 lanes go to one.
It's not that uncommon.

I've seen many 2 lane roads go down to one lane AFTER the intersection, but not in the middle of it. That would make it the most dangerous intersection ever.

It might be a few feet after the intersection and not exactly right there. Bottom line it merges into one light right after the light.

Why didn't you just jam on the brakes as hard as you could and claim damages

In California, "brake checking" is considered a felony. It's assault with a deadly weapon.

 That doesn't surprise me one bit.

I had an experience with that on the highway. A driver was riding my ass so I took my foot off the pedal to slow down. He got real pissed and made like he was going to run me off the road. He took off as soon as I whipped out a cell phone.

For a minute I was worried when you stated that you whipped out...lol
Just a few slight alterations:
"He took it off as soon as I whipped it out."

I would have just stayed the same speed or slowed down as others have said. Did you get the company name off the truck? If so, contact them and let them know what happened. If they are a decent company, then they should do something about it. I love screwing with people.

I don't know why people get so upset when you get tailgated. Just stop looking in your rear view mirror... I don't care what people do behind me since it has no affect on how I drive. Whether they are 1 foot or 10 years behind me, it doesn't matter.
Unless it was some small towing operation, and the guys in the truck were the owners.

I was waiting for a light. The roads are wet. Light turns green, I move up, I see the car on my right wants to get in in front of me so I let him in. Then the flatbed towtruck behind him speeds up and tries to get in also, and I dont let. I get in front of the truck. There are two men in the cab. The driver honks his horn and flashes his lights, flips the bird, etc. There is absolutely no reason why I should let him go in front of me. I already let one person in and that's normall y the accepted rule of the road. One car from each lane goes. Anyway, the speed limit is 40. He's about a foot from my rear bumper, so I speed up. I'm going 65 and he's still right up on my bumper. This goes on for about 5 or 6 minutes. I take a right turn down a very curvy road which is right over the side of a lake. He takes the turn too. The road is very slippery beacuse of the rain, and I know he can't keep up with me there or he'll end up in the lake. He starts falling back until I lose him.

I don't know, maybe they're at the bottom of the lake.

Should I have called the cops?
Should I still call the cops?

SHENS!

You're in NJ, so there should be a circle at that intersection and/or jughandles since left-hand turns would be illegal. :D

Good thing you do not live in Detroit

Actually I think you did the right thing, one car a time. Did you get the name of the company on the truck? Call the owner (If the driver is not the owner) tell the owner. Hell take an ad in the classified telling what happened and the name of the towing company. Nothing changes a company attitude like bad press.

I'd have gotten the name of the tow truck and called it in...stupid to risk the license they need to do their job with.

I am waiting to catch one of these flatbedders now...the second time I have seen the same guy fly up the shoulder lane at the merge here and basically cause a skidding pileup. Next time I am calling FHP. First time I thought the guy just screwed up and didn't get over fast enough/ran out of road...this last time he passed me...went 5 cars ahead as the lane ran out...he almost clipped the concrete wall.

I've never seen that. The only thing remotely close is when you have two lanes on one side but one on the other - then the right lane on the 2 lane part turns into a right turn only lane. I've never seen it any other way, and it's stupid to have it as your diagram shows. That can't be legal to be that way....2 lanes merging in an intersection? You can't change lanes in an intersection...I don't see how this could have been designed this way.

The diagram might be off alittle bit, it might merge a small distance after the intersection.

I can think of one where I live. The intersection of Hillsboro and Harding Place does the exact same thing.

I agree with that statement completely.

You should have slowed down to a crawl, then flashed the .45 you keep in your glove box.
The guy was driving a flatbed towtruck in NJ, what do you expect, diplomacy or understanding?

Yeah speeding up was pretty stupid, but I don't blame you for being a little freaked out right now

Call the police, too many idiots on the road these days and not enough police.

Sad that you even have to consider doing it, but I suppose that's the state of things these days.

I called the police on an aggresive driver the other day. Was passing a truck on the interstate, guess I took too long and the idiot behind me didn't care for it, cut in between myself and the truck behind me (that I just passed), rode my ass for a few miles while honking and flashing beams. Happened to be a trooper nearby who caught up to us and pulled him over after witnessing said jackassery.

You'll care when they can't stop in time and they shove you into a pole, or the oncoming lanes to be hit head on, or the dump truck in front of you, etc.

Then again, maybe you won't care anymore...

If they won't get off my bumper after a while, I will actually stop.

They are obviously in some sort of dire hurry, and I don't need poor drivers who are desperate to get to their accident riding my bumper. Let 'em ride the next guy's.

Ha, I meant should it happen again =)

And as for why people care if someone's tailgating you - there are any number of reasons, tho the first that comes to mind would happen to be an animal in the road. Rural road, not many lights, deer aplenty (varies by area ofc!) - what would have been a routine (in these parts at least) slamming on the brakes, could very easily become a minor to major fender bender depending on circumstances.
