Who the HELL thought it was a good idea to use the letter "O" and the number "0"?

An uppercase I, the letter "l", and the number "1"?

to make a 5 almost the same as a 6 with one tiny bit left out, and a 6 almost the same as an 8 with a tiny bit left out?

Edit: and 5 and S!

Idiotic! There are all kinds of other designs for the characters available that are more distinct.

I guess we all should have stuck to Sanskrit.

You don't need to get rid of the language to address the problems I listed.

But since you bring it up.

Prettiest written language in the world: perhaps middle eastern languages, though Japanese can look nice

Nicest sounding language in the world: French, preferably spoken by French women

Worst sounding language in the world: Chinese spoken by Chinese women

You will kill yourself if you are Chinese, Korean or Japanese.

OP, you forgot O and Q. My guess is they purposely used as few different motions as possible so it was easier for people to learn.

Either that or our writing system developed along with dozens of languages over thousands of years with practically no coherent plan in mind at any point. Maybe even both.

Thanks but didn't forget the, but decided to limit it (add C and G), and figured the O and Q is a little less easy to mistake with the mark than the others - and the context.

That was a sub-topic I didn't get into - I considered how "Q" is rarely seen outside where it's pretty clear what it is.

If you see "Quick" "Quantum" "Quiver" you're not going to mix it up with "Ouick" "Ountum" "Ouiver" the way you would not be sure whether that's a six or a five.

But, your point is still relevant for things like passwords with random letters.

I truly hope you joined the forums at a very young age.

Huh? For what it's worth, I didn't. I remember what it was like when arguments didn't have the internet to settle them. When that Star Trek episode you quoted hadn't been seen in a decade.

I think it's time for runes to make a comeback. Curves are effeminate.

Probably it was assumed that context would indicate whether something is a letter or a number. Would that have been true for hundreds and hundreds of years? I don't think it was until relatively recently that we mixed letters and numbers together and caused the confusion.

Don't think this ever happened...
"King Arthur, thank you for your hospitality in allowing us to stay here in your castle tonight."
"I am pleased that you will be staying. Your party is on Level 4C, in rooms TR-5A6 through 5A8."
